Seeing microSD preinstalled Map in Basecamp

Hello everyone, just joined this forum, so first of all let me say hello to all the members!

And let me also ask my first question!

I have recently purchased a 62ST, which works fine for me. I connect it to my macbook pro using basecamp, and I can see the preinstalled topo basemap in basecamp, when the device is connected. All good, so far.

I bought yesterday City Navigator 2011 preinstalled on a Micro SD card, which works fine on the 62ST.
Problem is I cannot see the maps on basecamp, and I would need them to plan some routes.

I can see two folders mounting when plugging the GPS: the Garmin one (the 62) and another one (with the serial n.) which is the SD.
And the same appears in Basecamp, to the left, but while i can select the topo map, nothing happens with CN.

I have left the device plugged for hours (i have read first time might take some time) but nothing happens.

Am I missing any step here?
thanks!
Gianluca
  • Sorry for "now you tell me post" but maybe it will warn others. I would never buy maps on and SD card or topo maps on the units. For example, I found a super deal on a new oragan 300 plus a DVD of 100K Topo USA. With a DVD, you can install the topo maps on your mac and use the maps without the hassle of plugging the GPS into the usb port. When you but a nuvi with City navigator maps preinstalled, Garmin gives you an update you can download and install on your mac.

I have never tried it but I think you can copy the SD Card maps to your mac, use apple disk utility to make a volume and BaseCamp will read the map volume when mounted. I know base camp will see my time capsule when the volume is mounted and you can drag waypoints, tracks, or routes to the time capsule for backup of individual objects. Maybe some on the forum can give better instructions. I also think your SD card should mount under the GPS for your selection to view the maps on the SD Card.
  • Could you post a screen shot of what you see in BaseCamp when the 62 and card are plugged in? That would be very helpful in helping figure out what is going on. If you could also take a screen shot of your map menu that would help.

Here the screenshots. I have taken one of the left sidebar of basecamp, the 62 shows there and there is also the folder named "010..." that is the micro SD. I have also take a screenshot of the Maps menu and one of the desktop where you can see both the Garmin image (the 62) and again the "010...".

Thanks in advance for the help!

It would really be great to get this feature fixed. I have not been able to see my gmapsupp.img files on the zumo 660. This is really hindering my use of BaseCamp since I don't want to have to install all of the maps on my "little" MacBook Air (running out of Disk):(

I've attached similar pic's to the ones you requested from MARUCCG.

    Cheers,

I think i found the answer to this, but I would be very happy if I am wrong.
Just found this, while digging in the Garmin website (see pic)

"Maps on microSD/SD cards cannot be copied or viewed on a computer."

that is very disappointing, since in many cases it's just much easier prepare a route on the PC rather than on the GPS.

Any chance we are going to see this change in the future?

    MARUCCG,

The text you're quoting pertains to installing the maps on a computer for use in Mapsource, BaseCamp, Training Center, etc.

Garmin has taken this approach to reduce their costs for Map Licensing as well as there is no need to create an installation image. It also provides some additional security to the Unlock process for map products. Not many of us like that fact that we can't purchase DVD's for many products but here we are.

But, this does not pertain to how BaseCamp [is suppose to] show the map since the map is installed only on the GPS unit and BaseCamp is just a temporary (as long as your GPS is connected) use of the Map set - meaning the single use license is not in violation since you can't use the map while the GPS is plugged into the computer.

One of the "selling points" of BaseCamp is that you don't need to install maps on your computer and on your GPS. There is a problem in BaseCamp that it can not index and display gmapsupp.img files on the GPS and/or SDCard. This really needs to be fixed and I expect the Dev Team is working on it.

    Hi DRTBYK,
reason why I quoted the following is mostly because it says viewed, which is what I was expecting from Basecamp

"Maps on microSD/SD cards cannot be copied or viewed on a computer."

I really hope I am wrong, let's see if the developers can help us on this
    cheers!

    MARUCCG,

Yes, I understand your concern. Garmin owns the Maps and BaseCamp so I think they can do whatever they want in this case.

I'd be happy if BaseCamp would just do what we're told it can: display the gmapsupp.img maps on your GPS. I can see the indexing fail as BaseCamp tries to read my gmapsupp maps.

    Cheers,
