Can anybody help with this problem. After i have finished a long hike i save the track on my 450T and then later send to basecamp and also Garmin Connect. which one displays the correct elevation gain, for instance when i load the track back into the Garmin it says total elevation gain is nearly 3000ft, but basecamp when i select get info states about 1570ft this is also the same with Garmin correct. which one should i take to be the correct info ?.
  • So :
    - how can I make my Etrex record the elevations from the map and not from its own calculation from satelites?
    - or, if I cannot, how can I replace, in BaseCamp, the elevations of the GPX file with the elevations from the TOPO map?

I don't have BaseCamp in front of me, but pulling from memory, on the track dialog, you choose the gear tool pull down, and choose Set Elevation to Match Map. That only will work on a Topo map obviously, but it sounds like you have that.

I don't believe there is a way to do that from the device, but I could be wrong.

Double click the track to bring up the track window. Click the gear at the lower left corner of the track window. If you don't have a topo map selected, the third item down the list (Set Point(s) to map elevation) will be grayed out. I use 24k topo and topo US 100k.

I have never really used the function but given GPS receiver with a 3-ft. rms horizontal accuracy may only have 10-15 ft. rms elevation I would think topo maps would be a better choice and I assume this is why the developers of BC added the feature.

Surly your not running a windows box at home. :-)

I cannot see such an option, perhaps because I am using the French version (3.1.3)?

Here are 2 screen captures. Can you tell me where to look, or where you have this option, before I try installing the US version?

    Thank you!
  • Question to Garmin developers!

Here are 2 screen captures of the same point :

    1) from a GPX file recorded by Etrex Legend Hcx (without altimeter, with TOPO France V2 loaded). Elevation : 104m.

    2) created as waypoint in BaseCamp with the same TOPO France V2 loaded. Elevation : 74m.

    Question :
Why does (1) record a wrong elevation (104m), even when during the walk it constantly displays the right elevation (from the map DEM)?!

    Thank you!

This is the Mac forum I see from the screen shot, you are running Windows. Click Here for Windows BaseCamp software.

Oops, sorry, I was happy to find a thread about total elevation in basecamp from the search box... :-(
