When I receive a .gpx file by email from friends for use on my GPS, I usually place it on the Desktop pending import into Basecamp. Once it has been imported, I try and delete the file from desktop. All goes well until you try and empty the trash when I am told that I cannot Delete the file because it is still in use. The only way to get rid of the unwanted files seems to be to restart - then the system will allow me to Empty the Trash as normal. Only a minor irritation but has anyone any ideas what might be the problem?
I think the problem is BaseCamp is not releasing the file and it could be dependent on your OS version. Have you tried quitting BaseCamp before you try to delete the file from the desktop.
Hi - thanks for the response. I am using OS 10.6.7 and the latest non-beta Basecamp. I do shut down Basecamp before clearing used files but it makes no difference - they are still reported as in use.
I am using OS 10.6.7 and beta 6.2.0.7. I tried to duplicate the issue and could not. GPX files vary a lot and I only tried a gpx file from geocaching.com. Not sure if it is the gpx file, the version of BC or some other issue.
How are you downloading the file? Could it perhaps be your browser/e-mail program that has a handle on the file still? It's a long shot, but I can't reproduce the behavior you're describing here (3.2.0.7), either.
Hi - thanks for the continued intetrest in my problem. Ok - this is how/when it occurs: I create a set of routes and waypoints for use on a forthcoming trip to Europe - they are all held within a single folder. In order to email the information to friends for their use, I export the folder onto the desktop as a .gpx file. I then attach the file to an email and send to friends - they receive and can use the file immediately. I am left with the .gpx file on my desktop - I move it to Trash and select Empty Trash - all other Trash is removed but I get a dialogue box telling me that the .gpx file cannot be removed as it is in use. At this stage Basecamp is not running - the only way I can break the lock is to restart the Imac and then the file will delete. I am not sure what is holding onto the file - it may be Mail - I will try exporting to the desktop and then deleting without emailing the file - this may show if its Mail or Basecamp holding the file.
OK - got it sorted out now. The problem is with Mail I think. If I simply Export a .gpx file to the desktop and then put it into Trash it can be deleted. However, if I email the file to someone and then trash the file, it can't be deleted while Mail is open - once its closed the Trash can be emptied.
