BaseCamp - maps & GPS units

You mention eTrex Vista, unless you meant the eTrex Vista HCx, the plain Vista is an older model, I used to have one of those, with 24megs of on-board memory and a grayscale screen... So some clarification is needed here.

As for your second question, I have non-Garmin maps appear in my map list in BaseCamp. Will all of them appear there? I can't answer that, but my Caribbean maps, South American maps as well as Canadian maps show up there.

I think I have the older Vista you mentioned.

If indeed it is the original eTrex Vista, in its gray case, if I remember well, you may be out of luck with BaseCamp. I know Mapsource will be the software of choice.

Frankly, I used to have one of those and used it in SAR. I would not dare using that one (it died, so I can't say much more about it) nowadays, as there are much better units around. On a low budget, look at the 60csx. You can't go wrong there.

You will find the built-in memory of the Vista to be extremely limiting and perhaps even modern GPS cartography may not work with this dinosaur. In addition, the newer GPS chips are vastly superior to the original eTrex line.

Sounds like a sales pitch? Well, I am not on Garmin's payroll nor a stockholder (yeah, as if one single sale might make a difference in the stock...), just a user of GPS devices.

Thanks for that. My father-in-law gave it to me so I'm not too concerned. I have an iPhone with quite a GPS app called Motion-x. It's probably not got the bells & whistles of a dedicated GPS unit but it works for my purposes.:D
