Hello and 1st question about routes in BC

Hi. I've just got my first GPS, it's a Zumo 660.
I've installed the maps and software that came on the included DVD.
Also the Zumo came with European maps preloaded.

I've connected the GPS via USB and just created some custom routes in BaseCamp 3.1.4 on my Mac. I clicked 'Send to GPS' but when I disconnect the GPS and switch it on, if I go to Custom Routes in the Where To menu, it says "No routes are available. Create a new route?"

Am I missing something here or is there a problem with my Zumo?

Sorry if this is a n00b question - I am a n00b!
Thanks for any help

edit:
I've noticed when BaseCamp is open and the GPS connected, if I show Installed Map Info, it shows:
City Navigator Europe NT 2011.1 • version 14.10 • Unlocked [on my Mac]
City Navigator Europe NT 2011.1 • version 20.11 • Unlocked [on my Zümo]

When I send, I am sending routes and waypoints. It says 'transfer complete'.

I haven't ticked 'Send maps with MapInstall when done' because I'm worried I might send an older map to my new GPS. Help!

I am right in thinking BaseCamp is for planning routes and uploading them to the Zumo aren't I? Confused as to why I can't make it work.

I'm also finding that the Zumo seems to crash, or just go blank. Please don't tell me I've got a duff one!
  • I think your zumo works like a nuvi, if so tap tools or setup on the zumo, tap MyData, and Import routes. You should be able to see the route you sent to the zoom after importing the route, it should appear under routes for selection.

You need to update you map on your mac. I think Garmin gives you free updates via downloads for a year and you can download more than once. Register you garmin, plug it into the Garmin DashBoard and download the latest map. When MapInstaller starts click the advance button and check the box to install on your computer.

I have never touched a zumo or a Garmin Europe map so if it don't work I will give your money back.

Hey! Thank you so much PSEABOLT! I never would have figured that I needed to press 'MyData' when there's an icon next to it saying 'Custom Routes.' I figured 'send to GPS' did what it said on the tin! Anyway, you've made my day so much better already. My routes are now available on the Zumo. Cheers!

I have registered my unit, and when my broadband internet connection is up and running I'll update the Zumo system software and then download the latest maps too. Garmin say I get 60 days from today to download the latest map. Kinda scares me doing firmware updates, so I'm not going to attempt it on a mobile broadband dongle. I know the maps are too big for that too.

Slightly off topic, but I find that the unit's screen sometimes just goes blank for no reason. Surely that's not normal? It's like the unit crashes and I have to hit the power button to switch it back on. Any ideas?
  • My Dakota has a battery saving mode that puts it to sleep and you have to touch the screen to wake it up. You can set how long it stays on or disable the feature. Probable not what is happening with your zumo but if it comes back up with the on button, you might want to check and see if the zumo has that feature.
