Custom Symbol / Icon for waypoints in BC

Under edit menu I find Manage custom waypoints symbols but when selected, I see None Found. I think you have to put your symbol in a special folder but I can find the path. Also will jpeg work?

Thanks
  • Turns our it was easier than I thought. All I had to do it select all the IHOP restaurants and Add Photo. Adding the photo to the waypoints does not change the symbol if you choose symbol but the desired results are the same. You get a different sort and the added photo shown on the map and in the list. I used a 24 x 24 pixels jpeg

I think Manage custom symbol is connected with the GPS.
  • Yes, you're correct that "Manage custom symbols" is primarily for use with sending to and receiving from our older non-mass storage devices (GPSmap 60, eTrex, etc.). It can also be used to change a symbol's id once loaded, in case you have existing waypoints expecting a specific custom symbol id.

To answer your initial question if you're still curious, you can drop the images in /Users/<your username>/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Custom Waypoint Symbols/ to have them read in as options. The folder probably won't exist if you don't have any symbols yet. They should be named between "0" and "63", and we support png, tga, tiff, bmp, and jpeg formats. So, for example, "5.jpg" would be read in as custom symbol #5.

While technically you can use any resolution image, we scale it down to 24x24 for display in BaseCamp, and further to 16x16 for transfer to the device. I recommend using a square image for best results.

Once the symbol has been loaded it will appear at the end of the list you get when you change a waypoint's symbol.

    Hope this helps!
  • Thanks for the helpful information. I keep my BaseCamp folder in dropbox to keep is synced between the MBP and iMac. I would think that I could put the same icons in both computers and it should work fine.

    Thanks
  • Adding a picture to a waypoint in 3.1.4 would show the picture as the symbol but when I upgraded to 3.2.0.7 beta, I lost the pictures however, this was a hack and not a problem for me. Thanks to ATHAWK's reply, I have the symbols showing in the choose symbol window.

Did you do this at install or did you do this with an Alias? Would like to do the same but my Mac skills are behind my Windoze skills.

    Cheers,
  • Here is the instructions, I am showing 3 pages of post and on the second page is and example with paths.

HOWTO: Sync BaseCamp data between Macs

It is the perfect solution for solution and google keeps 5 backups of your data on the cloud server. Works without an internet connect and syncs when you get connected again.

The only thing I have had to put on all three computers connected with user data is custom icons. I like to download a few POIs like Cracker Barrels but store the as waypoints. I know BaseCamp has Cracker Barrels stored but I have to zoom in or search to find them. With this method, I drag the route to the list contains Cracker Barrel waypoints and I can see all the Cracker Barrels on my route no matter what the zoom level. I use the custom symbol feature to add the Cracker Barrel logo and you have to put the 24x24 pixel custom files needs to be on all computers in the Custom Waypoint Symbols, described above by ATHAWK.
  • Thanks for the link - working fine. Wish it were as easy on the Windoze OS.
  • Thanks for the feed back, it nice to know if something works. It is even easier with SymbolicLinker, MARCOPIETERSMA posted on the same thread a link to the free app that thats adds a contextual menu item to the Finder that generates symbolic links to the selected files.
  • I'll check out SymbolicLinker. In the mean time have you done an update/install with these aliases in place? If so, any issues?

    Cheers,
  • At least 2 or 3, I am running 3.2.0.7 now. No issues
