Beginner's problems

I started using BaseCamp yesterday and wasn't aware of this specific BC thread, so I will take the liberty of copying my question here, as imported from:

https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?p=81138#post81138:

"What is the exact procedure to display BaseCamp routes ('tracks'?) on a nuvi1490?
If I simply 'export' them (from BaseCamp), they do not show up via 'Find'/'Routes'(?)
It appears that you have to open 'Tools'/'User Data' and 'import' a given route(?) - but three times out of four my nuvi turns itself OFF in the process!
(The 'labels' may have names slightly different from the ones I quoted above - I use Danish language on my device, so I don't know the exact terminology). "

Additionally, I notice some differences between the user interfaces of the Mac- and Windows-versions, respectively. This makes it somewhat complex for a newbie like myself to use both; is there a good reason for this?

Finally a specific question: I one wants to create a track by means of waypoints, the start- and end points should be dragged into a box. I managed to do this once in Windows - but find it impossible to drag waypoints on the Mac(?) What's the secret? :)
  • I'm not sure what exactly is happening, but it appears to be an issue with the 1490. You should contact customer support to help resolve your issue.

To drag a waypoint hold down Option when you click and drag.

    - thanks. I still wonder whether the requirement to use the option key is described in the Help files - but I may have overlooked something(?)

    - no problem: I was new in the forum and believed I might have posted in a less appropriate thread. In the future I'll do my best to hit the optimum thread first time! :)

    From the BaseCamp help:
    Moving a Waypoint

    • Click the Selector Tool.
    • Press and hold Option, and click and drag the waypoint to a new location.

You can also move a waypoint by changing its position coordinates. See Editing Waypoints for more information.

    From the BaseCamp help:

    - yes, I see that now! :)

But that seems to facilitate moves on the map, only(?)
If I want to create a new route (by means of waypoints), I have to drag the start and destination waypoints into the 'Empty Route' box - how is that accomplished??
  • For a new route, why don't you command click the waypoints in the order you want the route created and right click the selection to select Create Route From Waypoint(s)?

    - good question! :)
The answer must be 'lacking understanding of the user interface': I attempted to mark the waypoints on the 'map', instead of those in the 'subwindow' ('Library and Units' (or the equivalent?)) in the upper left corner of the Basecamp display.

After my first succesful attempt I get the impression, however, that 'route creation by waypoints' results in straight lines between waypoints, rather than routes that follow the roads connecting the points - is that correct?

BTW: Some waypoints are shown as a small green dot - others (the majority) as blue flags. What's the rationale?

Go to preferences, click the route icon and check auto routing. You are on direct routing now used for cross country without roads. I assume you have City Navigator, a map with addresses and routing information.

It sounds like you are creating waypoints from cities to make waypoints. If you make a waypoint from a restaurants you get a fork and knife icon. Double click the waypoint and you can change the icon. Changing waypoints icons is a useful tool for organizing your geodata. A tent for campgrounds, tree for national forest, etc.

    - thanks for advice, I shall be using the coming days to 'hone my skills'! :)
(and yes, I have City Navigator).
