I do not use BaseCamp or Mac so this is a bit of a guess.

First do a "save as" and rename the file by adding ver2 or something so you will still have the original file in case something goes wrong.

Then click on that long straight leg and delete it. Then your track should stop up at Soto. If you get another long leg just keep deleting it until it stops appearing.

If you look at the trackpoints list you will see that you are deleting points off the bottom of the list.

Yes to all your questions. First get your pointing tool and double click the track. Not required but helpful If you use the drop down on the track window (lower left corner gear symbol) To draw an elevation profile. Next double click the point on the track you want to split. From the same window drop down, select split at selected point. Split will be grayed out if you don't have a point selected. You need to split again at the other end of the straight line if you are dealing with a loop. Now select the straight line and delete, If you preform the split correctly, the part of the track you want to keep will not be selected when you select the straight line.

I think you deleted the track points without splitting the track and with the reference points gone, BC draws a straight line.
