I have an 8 GB SD Card in my Ledgend HCx but MapInstall will only let me put 4GB on it. I have tried using a card reader but still limited to 4 GB. Is there another way of installing TOPO U.S. so I can put the entire map set on my GPS?
  • I think if you go to garmin's support and check FQAs you will find your GPS either has a limit on the number of tiles that can be installed or the unit will not recognize 8 MB.
  • I think you should blame Microsoft, which designed FAT32 with maximum file size 4GB :)

I have an 8 GB SD Card in my Ledgend HCx but MapInstall will only let me put 4GB on it.

All maps are saved in the (single) gmapsupp.img file. An 8GB card would be using the FAT32 file system which limits the size of any file to 4GB. This is a limitation of the FAT32 file system and has nothing to do with Garmin, your Legend, or your card.

If you want to carry more than 4GB of maps you can create multiple files and rename the set you want to use to gmapsupp.img. Of course you need a PC, PDA or Smartphone to rename the file(s) on the card.

The number of map "tiles" is another issue to consider. I'm not sure what the limit is for the Legend HCx (try Google). I know my 76CSx is limited to 2025.

I'm not blaming Garmin, in the eTrex era, 4GB was big for handheld devices but I think you would have to agree that Garmin has developers smart enough to use multiple files for storing maps. I don't like FAT32 either, the file naming has caused me more problems that the 4 GB file size.
  • Multiple img files on SD are supported in new devices like Oregon or 62/78.

how to name multiple map files on the microSD 8GB card?

I have a Model 62st... and trying to figure out how to put MULTIPLE, DIFFERENT maps on my 8GB microSD card.

How must the multiple files be named?

    gmapsupp.img

    or

    gmapprom.img

How can I have multiple map files on my 8GB card?

thanks so much for the help!

  • Very new devices like the GPSMap 62 will support multiple maps. For these, you simply need to rename a gmapsupp.img to <anything else>.img. MapInstall hasn't been updated to support this feature yet, so currently you will need to manually rename the file and then run MapInstall again to create another gmapsupp.img.
