Attention Bicyclists - what would you want?

If BaseCamp offered a bicycling mode that customized the way BaseCamp works, what would you want it to do?

We need your feedback, but in order to get it in a way that allows us to better priorities features we need you to follow the following guidelines.
Please list two things you would want the mode to do or change. You may only list the 2 most important items, any more and the post will be deleted.

Also, please list 1 or 2 things that you currently like about the latest BaseCamp release so we know what should stay the same.
  • 1 - A great option would be to avoid main streets by planning a route.
2 - A comprehensive analysis tool for the height profile incl. slope independent of the used map (height data from google earth).

Things I'd like to see added:

1 - The ability to create a route and switch between direct routing and auto routing for the sections between via points. I often have routes that include sections of city trails that are not on even the TOPO 24K maps. If I could use auto routing most of the time but switch to direct routing for the pieces I travel on the trail that would make my life a lot easier.

2 - The ability to set target speeds for each section between via points and then, when transferring the route to a capable GPS, have the virtual partner use those target speed to indicate how you're doing vs. your goal. I realize it might take updating the firmware on the GPS as I don't know if the virtual partner feature allows you to have one section at speed A and the subsequent section at speed B but it sure would be a nice feature.

    Things I like:

1 - The 3D display is cool. I know that's not a usability feature but it does look good. :)

2 - It's very easy to click on the route tool, click starting point, intermediate point, and end point and (using auto routing and an all road route) have your route created. Then by clicking the selector tool you can tweak the route to take the exact roads you want. Finally a push of a button and the route is sent to your GPS - all very quickly, very easily and very intuitively.

What I'd like to see added:

    - Projection Angle adjustment.
It's really hard to plan bicycle trips up here in the north if you can't easily estimate distances between points just by looking at the map (CNE). If it's not feasible to add this feature to GUI, at least please make it available for manual editing in com.garmin.BaseCamp.plist.

    What I like about Basecamp:

    - 3D orientation "globe" is great. Easy to use and intuitive.

    • Smart Routing - auto routing option, like Google Maps for Bikes, that takes into consideration bicycle facilities like bicycle lanes, etc.
    • Ability to plan bicycle routes to support bicycle tours, etc. - and the ability to download these to Garmin devices like the Edge 705
    • Display of bicycle facilities (e.g., bicycle lanes, bicycle routes, multi-use paths, etc.).

    I'd like to see:

A measuring tool that would follow a track line, and would allow the user to measure just a portion of a track. This can be done by using the divide tool and cutting the track into separate pieces, but then once it is measured they all need to be merged back together again. It would be more convenient to have a measuring tool that would just measure whatever segment you select, and leave the track structure alone.

You can also find the distance for a portion of a track by opening the track properties window and selecting the portion of the track points you are interested in then viewing the "Directions" tab. There's a column there for Total Distance.

No splitting/joining required but you will have to do some math depending upon where you want to know the Distance.

    Cheers,

Take a look over here https://forums.garmin.com//showthread.php?t=22940 for a second even easier way to measure track segments pointed out by KGANSHIRT.

Its as simple as just drawing a box around the segment using the selector tool while holding the mouse button down, releasing it, and all the points from that segment are highlighted in the properties window with the total distance and time appearing at the bottom.

It would be nice to enter average speeds for driving, cycling etc as in the PC mapsource program so that when plotting a route it would use that avg speed for calculating the trip time , not all of us ride at the same avg speed.

If i plot a route, call it "lake loop" for example, it shows like that in my collection - i would like to click send to GPS and have it transfer that selected route ONLY to the the garmins GPX folder and have it show in that folder as "lake loop.gpx" in finder, at the moment it just sends all of my collection into one large file "temp.gpx" It is much nicer to have each route saved as a seperate identifiable gpx file ( i work around this currently using the export feature) THIS GLITCH IS HUGELY ANNOYING, THE LARGE TEMP GPX FILE TAKES FOREVER TO LOAD ON MY EDGE 705

Problems with basecamp - my collection is just too busy , i never want to see all my routes/tracks/waypoints at the same time, there is no need. Just have a list of routes etc showing on the left and only display the selected ones, i know there are work arounds with the folders/smart folders but its just not as simple as mapsource on the PC

I also don't think there is currently a way to set road avoidances like in mapsource, i have a major highway bisecting my town, i don't ever want a bicycle route to go along it

    Thanks!

    want to have:
    - set own speed for different activities: biking, driving, etc. (not everyone has around 22km/h speed like what is used now)
    - ability to click in a route to create via points instantly (like in google map route), not having to create waypoint manually and drag that waypoint to the route's window's via point's tab

    current features i like:
    - distance and time for each turn in the directions' tab
    - map only shows the routes/waypoints of selected list
