Lost trackpad control in v. 3.1.1

What happened in 3.1.1? I can't use my trackpad to scroll around anymore. This is a terrible loss. What happened? Do I really have to go back and forth between tools to do the most basic stuff? The two finger scroll with the pinch zoom was the very best map control of any map program out there. Is it really gone?

This is totally unusable. I need to go back to the last version. Where can I find that file?
    Thanks

  • Hopefully it will return. I was blaming the problem on my new magic mouse until I saw your post and tried the macbook pro.
  • To be closer to the experience that users expected based on other mapping applications, we changed the default action for scrolling to zoom in and out. If you hold the Option key down, then BaseCamp will scroll up and down and side to side. Sorry for the inconvenience.
  • The Mac app already had an excellent (pinch/spread) zoom feature that's becoming a Mac standard for touch screen and touch pad devices. Any chance this functionality could be returned?

The zoom feature still works on the MacBook I just tested it on. It shouldn't have been affected at all by the above change.

My bad. I should have been clearer. The functionality I was referring to was the two finger scrolling without the need for the option key. This is in keeping with other Mac apps. I mentioned the zoom to point out that a superior zoom feature already existed, changing it (scrolling) wasn't needed IMO.

[edit: Killtimer's post made my previous text unnecessary.]

In user testing, desktop users expected scroll to zoom, likely because of previous use with other apps . As a trackpad user myself, I do miss scroll to pan being the default quite a bit. The hand tool is now selected by default, so the map can still, generally, be manipulated solely with trackpad input.

We'll consider what we can do to keep both camps happy.
  • Option key work for me, thanks. Two finger zoom on the MBP and one finger zoom on the magic mouse is a more controllable and easier zoom for me than pinching. I don't have a problem with hitting option to scroll the map. I thought it was a big set backwards but with the option key, it gives the user easy scrolling and zooming and it works without a multi touch pad.

If you had a preference to change what the option key did it might please more but unlike MapSource on windows, Macs should have relative clean preference dialog boxes.

Was anyone actually complaining? I'd like to campaign all the others to follow Garmin in this aspect. It really was the best of the bunch.

Thanks for the "option key" option. It will help, though it is still not as good as it was. I am I crazy or is the map moving opposite to what it was before? Scott

Hi there. I can't believe you did this. Apple innovates with multi fingers trackpad gesture to help user. You at Garmin used those innovations then throw it away, saying that user is not used to it? Seriously, how can you educate people that way?
I just think Base Camp is a wonderfull app. You did simplify the work of plannig a trip with it. And with trackpad gestures it was much more faster. Why can't we have an option in preferences to chose the best way to use the trackpad?
