Sorting tracks by date & time

Is there a way to organize tracks according to date and time in Base Camp ?

I'm trying to find the tracks generated during a 2 week trip this summer, but unfortunately can not find an option to sort tracks by date & time. Now I have to go through the whole list of tracks. I can sort them by 'Name', but that is not very useful. The 'Name' seems to be generated from the date and time, but sorting that as string is very unhelpful. See screenshot for details.

The dates are in Finnish locale. You can see '05 SYY' (5th of Sept) being followed by '06 HEL' (6th of Feb) and then '06 Lok 2009' (6th of Oct). Hopefully you get the idea.

The smart list feature would be helpful in solving my problem if it only had more options.

Edit the names of the tracks is the only way I've been able to do it.

    Make the names YYYY.MM.DD HH:MM

    i.e.

    2010.10.24 01:15

And they will automatically sort in chronological order.

If you are good with a text editor, you can automate that task.

Thanks for the reply Denny. I just now noticed the older thread where you had already earlier brought up the issue of Imported Track Names.

Frankly, i'm too lazy to manually go through and rename 1,5 years of tracks. Since the track names are a cumbersome approach to sorting, I was thinking would it be possible to use the date & time in the track log for sorting? For instance the Time of Index 1 of every track ?

Ultimately i'd like to have 3 columns in the bottom left space of the main window:
    1) Type (where the footprints are),
    2) Name of the track and finally the
    3) Date & Time.

Put the track files in a folder in BaseCamp.

Export that as a GPX file and save it.

    Download Text Wrangler ....Barebonessoftware.com

Use the find and replace feature to find the dates in your localized format and replace them with ASTM format.

Then import that file into Basecamp.
The track segments will be sorted in chronological order.

Granted working with 1.5 years worth of tracks will be quite a task, but that will be much easier than doing it manually.

I guess it just depends on how important that is to you.

A weeks worth of tracks (3000 miles) was not too difficult to sort out.

Still it should just work from within the Garmin software.

Does mapSource support sorting in Chronological order?

Maybe everyone has found this now, but it's pretty easy to sort these, at least temporarily.

Get the tracks showing in the bottom left panel view. Then "Swap Map and Data Views" to put the tracks on the right panel, revealing all the data columns. Then click on the "Start Time" column header to sort them by date in the only way that makes sense to a human. Then you can select a day's worth for combining them or whatever.

Unfortunately, that sort isn't persistent. When you swap them back the list goes back to its less-than-useful default order.

The default sort, arranging the track list "Active Track...." strictly alphabetically, hence by the day of the month, is pretty poor. It's a simplistic method; they must have assumed people will actively rename tracks.

I have used a "Master Tracks" file for all of my track info with mapsource. It got to be too much of a mess looking at the maps if it showed both Tracks and Routes, so I made a separate file for them. In BaseCamp I'll use a different list for tracks.
  • Thanks for the pointer. Unfortunately it's for the Windows version of BaseCamp and this is the Mac forum.

It is even easier to sort by date and time on the Mac version. Simply click the gear button above the lists and click Sort by Time, either ascending or descending.
