Custom Symbols on Mac

I notice there's a thread that explains how to add custom symbols on a PC, but how do you do it on a Mac? Is there a Custom Waypoint Symbols folder (or equivalent) on the Mac? I can't seem to find one.

Thanks

    Re: Custom Symbols on Mac

I'd love to hear how that works.
I know that the same stuff is visible with the Mac but you have to know where to look.

If you give me a pointer to the thread I'll see what I can find in the unit.

Thanks azdrmn... that's kind of what I suspected after searching my Mac, and appreciate knowing for sure. MTIERNAN, in view of this, I don't know if you're still interested in that thread, but here's a link: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=4582.

Thanks for the update today :)

One question, the update notes say Custom Symbols are now supported (under Edit > Manage Custom Waypoint Symbols) but this doesn't appear to work with the Custom Symbols I'm using on my Oregon 550 e.g. with a /Garmin/CustomSymbols folder.

I tried creating a ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/BaseCamp/CustomSymbols folder, as well as ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/CustomSymbols folder, but neither of these picked up the Custom Symbols that are already installed and working fine on the OR550.

Additionally the Custom Symbols window doesn't report a supported GPS, when I can happily download Birdseye imagery. Is the Custom Waypoints feature of the OR550 not supported? Please don't tell me that older units are supported, but not the newer ones :(

I would really like to override the default Geocache symbol and display my Custom Symbols for each cache type so they mesh with what is on the GPS. E.g. being able to display symbols in BaseCamp for...

    CustomSymbols/Earthcache.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Event Cache.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Geocache Found.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Multi-cache.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Parking Area.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Question to Answer.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Reference Point.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Stages of a Multicache.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Traditional Cache.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Trailhead.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Unknown Cache.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Virtual Cache.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Webcam Cache.bmp
    CustomSymbols/Wherigo Cache.bmp

This works great on the OR550, and I was hoping this update would allow BaseCamp to read these off the OR550\Garmin\CustomSymbols and override the somewhat useless Geocache icon.

This would make BaseCamp much more useful being able to tell at a glance what type a cache is :)
  • Sorry, 3.1.1 only supports symbols for the older units, including eTrex, GPSMap 60, GPSMap 76, Quest, etc. There are still a lot more of those out there than GPS 62s. Don't give up though. We are planning on adding support for the GPS 62's custom waypoint symbols.

Thanks for the clarification. I'd like to add that amongst the people I cache with, there are quite a few Oregons that can support the new Custom Symbols, so it isn't just limited to the new 62/78 series, but includes the OR450/OR550 too. Not to mention that the OR550 is the flagship handheld model, and isn't supported ;)

Can I please put in a polite request that this would be a very useful and cool feature to have? :)
  • Any update to custom waypoints being supported in Mac basecamp for the Oregon 450T? So far I have had no luck with custom waypoints. Under Edit> "Manage custom waypoint symbols" does not detect custom waypoints, nor does it recognize my Oregon - it just says 'no compatible gps found"

Hello, any news about support for custom symbols for never GPS devices? I would like to use them with my Oregon 300 for caches.
  • I don't think the Oregon 300 supports custom waypoint symbols and unfortunately I doubt it will be added. Custom waypoint symbols were added as a feature in the Oregon 450/550. Sorry for the inconvenience.
