GPX Files Not Opening

I was given a large number of waypoints, each saved as an individual .gpx file. I'm unable to open any of them in Basecamp - always get a "is not a valid GPX file and could not be opened." message. However, they will open in Google Earth.

I opened one of the files with TextEdit, and it appears that they were edited and saved with Route Buddy 1.1. I'm guessing that Route Buddy saved them in a format not recognized by Basecamp (but being a newbie, that's just a guess).

Any help would be most appreciated.
  • I use RouteBuddy 2.6 to read GPX files that BaseCamp will not read. Export them as GPX and BaseCamp imports the files fine. I think you can download a trial version without maps of Routebuddy 2.6 free. See if it will read the 1.1 and try an export.
  • Unfortunately many applications write invalid XML files. BaseCamp validates that the files meet the appropriate specification, in this case the GPX schema, before reading the data from the file. If you want to see what the error is with a specific file you can look at the console after a failed read. It will tell what the problem was and give the line and character number in that line of the error.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the trial version of Route Buddy.

I did find an online converter "GPS Visualizer" and tried it on one of the gpx files. It works, but with hundreds of files to convert, I'm hoping not to have to each one manually.

I tried opening both the original gpx and the good converted one using Text Edit, and was able to figure our which lines are causing the problem. So I know enough to manually fix them, but still have no clue how to create something to do them as a batch.

Console doesn't seem to show a BaseCamp error when the files fail to open, but I'm not really familiar with Console, so perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

Hey PEASBOLT, worked like a charm! I downloaded the Route Buddy 2.6, ran it in demo mode, imported all those gpx's, and exported as gpx, and now can open them with BaseCamp, no problem. Thanks so much for the suggestion!! You saved me a lot of time and aggravation. Thanks to you to azdmn!
