basecamp not reading topo maps

bought a brand new oregon 450t (with pre-installed topo maps). updated the firmware to the latest. downloaded latest basecamp & ran check for the latest version to ensure that I do have the latest. I tried to run basecamp on Mac Snow Leopard (with all the latest updates installed) and on windows xp (2 different computers) with all the latest updates installed as well. the result is the same.

when I connect my oregon to USB, base camp recognises the device and shows progress bar:
WorldWide autoroute - loads ok
gmaptz - has red bar
gmapprom(.img) [where i think topo maps are] does not appear at all

this same scenario happens on all all 3 computers I have.

I DO need topo maps in basecamp to do trip/route planning.

please advice what to do?
  • I believe that the map files that were downloaded with my purchase are "Topo100K_Alaska.unl", "Topo100K_Alaska.gma", and "Topo100K_Alaska.img".

In the Garmin base folder there is also a "gmapbmap.img" file, but no "gmapprom.img" or "gmapsupp.img". I did rename the "Topo100K_Alaska.img" to "gmapsupp.img" with the effect that it now works perfectly fine in BaseCamp (software recongizes the device and the Topo map shows up as dropdown in the sidebar) but the GPSMAP62 doesn't recognize the map anymore :(

I can probably rename the *.img file back to original and keep the "gmapsupp.img" as a copy, but I don't want to waste 800MB of my device's internal memory. Is there no way to just install the map in BaseCamp? Also, what happens if I install a second Topo map on my device (I was planning to install some parts of Western Canada) - can I use both at the same time in BaseCamp?

Thanks again for your help! :-)

A future release of BaseCamp will work around this issue, but in the meantime, you could rename all your Topo100K_Alaska files to gmapsupp and then it should work on both the Mac and your 62.

There is a downside to this approach. If use MapInstall later to install other maps it will overwrite the gmapsupp files. As always, I suggest you back up all your Topo100K_Alaska files for safekeeping.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

The gmapsupp.img file is the map file created when you send maps to your GPSr using a program like MapInstall. If you sent maps from your computer to your GPSr then you should be seeing a gmapsupp.img file.

Ok, but i haven't sent maps to the GPS, i just want to access the maps that where pre-installed when i got it. How do I located the built in maps, are they in the /GARMIN folder. I can see a 1..92GB file named gmapprom.img which i am assuming it is the topo maps due to its size?

Not sure why it would be so hard for Basemap to read a configuration that is as-shipped from Garmin.

If you want to view the pre-installed maps on the Oregon 400T then you need to plug it in to the computer using the USB cable. Once plugged into the computer select the GPS from within BaseCamp, it will be listed at the top of the sidebar on the left-hand side under 'My Garmin Devices'. This will load the maps from GPS. You may have to select the map you want to view from the 'Map' menu.

If you are trying to install the maps that are pre-loaded on the GPS on to the computer by coping it from the GPS's internal storage to the computer's disk, forget about it. You can't do that. The only way to load and view those maps is by plugging the GPS into the computer. If you want to view the maps without plugging in the GPS then you'll have to buy a copy on DVD or the download version and install it separately. Don't buy the version on microSD/SD card as those only work while plugged in to the GPS which is essentially what you have now.

    Thanks for your help GCERULLO,

I've followed that process on both a PC and Mac using basecamp and the only map that shows up when I expand my 400t is the WW autoroute map. NO topo. I've left it sit for hours thinking it will take a while to sync etc with no luck. Everything seems to be working (no error logs etc). Its just not reading the maps for some reason. Really annoying.

Garmin Support have been pretty much useless so far unfortunately. Just the usual "make sure you update to the latest version' etc.

Do you see any other item on expanding 400t which is named "Failed"? This would indicate that Basecamp attempted to read the topo map and failed due to other reasons.

    Ditto

I also have an Oregon 450T. The installed 100K maps definitely do not appear when the unit is plugged in and BaseCamp is running. The only maps that are shown are Global Application Basemap v2 along with a couple of state maps which I have downloaded. The Garmin map that is installed in the Oregon is not in the list. What's happening here?

My Oregon 450T has a file called gmapprom.img in its internal memory. I believe that is the installed 100K topo map. It also has a file called gmaptz.img that may be the internal base map. The 100K topo map cannot be copied back into BaseCamp, so probably does not appear there.

My 16GB SDHC card contains the larger scale maps that I have downloaded, as well as quite a few BirdsEye images. All show up on the device on the Enable/Disable page.

I can't find anything like failed etc. Does basemap store a log in the console app?

Could you send us your GarminDevice.xml which should be located in Volumes/GARMIN/Garmin/ or Volumes/Your Device/Garmin/ . It would also help if you could send us a snapshot ( attach a screenshot of Finder ) of the remaining device files in /GARMIN/Garmin/.

    Hi Asrid,

Please find attached my xml and file contents. Also included a screenshot of basecamp if it helps.

    Thanks for your help!
