Data mining for updates?

I've been wondering, with all the information that my unit returns to Garmin (via my desktop, etc.), does Garmin mine the data for POIs that are new to their databases?

Example, I was looking for a hotel which wasn't in the database. I grabbed the info from Google maps and sent it to my unit.

Does Garmin get that info? Do you/they care?
  • I don't care and I feel certain there are better ways to get hotel updates and user entered data. They have google too and I would think google's POI would be much more accurate than user data.

So you speak for Garmin? I can't imagine that Garmin would want to pay for information that is at their disposal.

I've also noticed that there's a POI Feedback button for corrections (limited as it may be) which represents a data mining aspect to the process.

    Anyone else have an opinion?

No, I don't speak for Garmin. Not that I care but I don't think Garmin is pulling POI, waypoints or anything else except crash reports from user's GPSs and only when you submit the report. If garmin is paying for POIs it is to get the information formatted and verified. 99.9% of the POIs want Garmin to show their location.
  • Garmin does not mine user's data. The desktop applications do not forward user's data to Garmin unless the user instructs it to. The only information that is sent to Garmin engineering is to help solve a reported crash: type and number of processors, amount of RAM, and the maps that are installed on the user's computer.
