Problem Communication with the Garmin Device

I have an Oregon 400t with software 3.80 on it. After a 3 day trip I came back to get data off it onto my Mac (OSX 10.6.4 fully patched) using BaseCamp 3.02.

I get the error message "There was a problem communicating with the Garmin device." Both the Oregon and the installed memory card are mounted properly on my desktop. The memory card is read fine by BaseCamp. It just won't show any data on the Oregon.

This had been working fine.

I've tried the Clean Eject utility. I've removed the batteries and restarted. I've reinstalled software 3.8.

Does anyone have any ideas of what else to try?

(as a side note, I can't view or delete any tracks in the Manage Tracks icon either.)
  • It sounds like one of the .gpx files may be corrupted on your Oregon. Take a look at your console after you get this error and see if there are any error messages from BaseCamp.
  • I have almost the same problem:
Running BaseCamp 3.2.2 on OS 10.6.8 with Nuvi 250.
Weeks ago I have buy the lifetime updater for Nuvi, in these days I had used the device and basecamp without problems but today it won't works.
"There was a problem communicating with the Garmin device."

BaseCamp shows me the device but there is nothing in it and I can't import and export waypoints or stuff.

BaseCamp is also too slow doing everything (after the communication problem appears).

    Can somebody help me?

    Thanks!

As azdrmn indicated, this may be caused by data on your device. Plug the GPS into your computer (don't start BaseCamp) and then back up your GPS data. Then delete the data in the \Garmin\GPX folder on your GPS and try opening BaseCamp.

    Cheers,
  • thanks Dan
I deleted the .gpx file in the garmin/gpx folder but nothing has changed!

(I did the backup of it, may be I mistood something? I only have to delete that single file, don't I?)

    Thanks again.

  • garmin/gpx/current.gpx is the only file I have on the device of .gpx kind.
    Nothing has changed!

Does anyone have any ideas of what else to try?

    thanks!

Now that I've read over your original posts, I believe you are having the same problem that many of us are having.

That being, BaseCamp seems to read the µSD card fine once. Then, after that it has left "orphaned clusters" and can no longer read the card because of those clusters. BaseCamp just keeps trying to read the card and never finishes trying to "transfer data".

So, I don't think it's your problem BILL.ROSETTI and MATTEOCHIOCHETTA.

    Cheers,
  • Thanks Dan
But it seems to be not the same problem.
Because I have no popup alerts quitting BC and no resolution after reinstalling BC from AppStore!

And also no round arrows keeps turning for me. I have no SD card in my Nuvi but, BC founds one device called "GARMIN" - the real GPS device with 4GB memory and stuff inside - and one another seems the same name of iDisk, I don't know why.

    Thanks!

OK. Yes, it is showing your iDisk and it should not. This is a problem that they are working on.

    Cheers,
  • Re-installed BaseCamp 3.2.2 and still no communication between software and Nuvi... too sad.
