Where are my maps?

Yes, you have to have your Nuvi connected to use it's maps in BaseCamp.

You can install maps in basecamp. You can't move the maps or install from your nuvi but if you have a dvd or a download file just install the in the basecamp maps folders. If you bought your nuvi with maps installs I think garmin will send you a dvd for $10.

I started up my old mac and I can use the Europe map without the nuvi connected so there is no reason why I should not be able to do this on my new Mac. As for the North America I still don't see it even after Base Camp spends a good 5-10 minutes transferring from my nuvi. Where did this data go??

Pseabolt, what files exactly do I have to copy the the Garmin maps folder? I only have the map installed on an sd card in the device itself. I tried to download again but it the Garmin site won't let me (even though it clearly and correctly identifies that I have paid for the North America map).

Any further help is appreciated while I wait for my support request to Garmin to be handled. Thanks.

Garmin does not support upload of SD card or GPS maps to a Mac or Win computer. You need a download or a DVD. If you call support and talk to the right person, the will send you a DVD for $10 of the maps you purchased on SD Cards or internal memory of GPS devices.

You can copy maps form your old mac to your new mac. Place them in the folders described above. In BaseCamp under Maps menu select unlocks codes. Sometimes you can bring your unlock codes from the old mac to your new but other times you have to go to garmin page enter serial number to get the unlock codes. You can register your maps under MyGarmin and make the process easier.

I have downloaded City Navigator North America several times. I have to plug the Nuvi in to get the download but the map is installed in BaseCamp as well as on the nuvi. I would think you should be able to get North America map installed. It is just SD cards and GPS memory you can't move to a hard drive.

I tried one last time and still no luck. According to the Garmin support pages:

Downloadable Content: Maps purchased in this format can be downloaded directly from the Garmin website. This is the quickest method of getting mapping for your next trip. Downloaded maps can be sent to either your GPS unit or a blank datacard. All maps in this format are unlocked to a specific device and they can only be used on the device that they were unlocked to. Similar to the pre-programmed datacards, this mapping is not available on your computer for use in planning routes.

The last line makes it clear that despite costing the same as the DVD, the download is crippled to not work on a computer. I don't know how you manage but for me I get no option to install on my Mac, only on the nuvi itself (or it's installed memory card). This is annoying but Base Camp is still usable with the GPS connected to the Mac. I hope one day Garmin will change their policies and allow all their paying customers to use to the full extent their products.

I have to agree. I have a lifetime update for City Navigator North America. I have downloaded and used the updated maps several times on both my desktop and laptop. Lifetime update must be different from your case but I don't understand why.

When I went to manage my maps under myGarmin, I was told there was an update available. Clicking get update with the nuvi plugged into the mac downloaded a new app I had never seen call Garmin Map Update. I dragged it to my application and launched. Clicking the advanced button gave me a check box to install map on computer which I checked.

FIgured out one way on my GPSmap 60CSx

I'm in a similar predicament as the OP. I have a GPSmap 60CSx, and purchased the US Northwest Topo 24k from the website. This particular map set is only available from the site as a download or pre-installed microSD card, so DVD's not even an option.

So far, I've figured out one way of getting the map to show up in BaseCamp: I put the device into USB Mass Storage mode and restarted BaseCamp. It detected the card (as 'NO NAME') and the map that I had downloaded onto it using the firefox plugin, plus all the POIs, etc. However, it took a while to actually load all the 1.5GB map. Next time I'll try accessing it directly via an SD reader, or manually copying the img file to my hard drive to see what happens.

Anyway I was finally able to set waypoints and plan routes via BaseCamp, though I must say, the interface leaves a lot to be desired.

Next issue: the waypoints and routes that I saved on the card were not immediately available on the device once USB Mass Storage mode was turned off (by ejecting the volume). I had to save the data locally to BaseCamp (under 'My Collection'), then reconnect the GPS to BaseCamp in normal mode and transfer the items back to the GPS.

It's workable, but the workflow is way too complicated. We should be able to directly access these maps from BaseCamp! If I hadn't found this workaround, I'd be planning on ditching the device and any future Garmin devices. I'd like to see a serious effort to make your products usable on the Mac.

Works from SD Reader too

Quick update: Just tried sticking the card in my SD reader and it worked from there too, and map loading was significantly faster (I'm assuming the 60CSx only uses USB1, given it's age). YMMV.
