Can't create favorite waypoint categories

I just want to be able to create favorite waypoint categories like you can do with MapSource. I hate the fact that I can't keep my favorites organized when using BaseCamp. It really makes the Favorites menu option kind of a waste.
  • I am not sure what you mean by ,like Mapsource or which gps you are using. I hope this reply is not totally off base. Here is how I manage my Nuvii 750. I like to keep my favorite list on a trip bases. I use the POI loader to load longer list points i want to carry all the time on the gps. I find long list are managed better with POI than favorite. I make list for each trip in base camp add waypoints and drag the waypoints to my gps.

MapSource, and many high end GPS receivers allow you to assign custom defined categories to a user created waypoint. These categories can be custom named and assigned singly or in multiples. For example I use this system for accommodation. <Lodging><Specific Trip><Keepers>. Where "Lodging" and "Keepers" are semi permanent categories and "Specific Trip" being the trip name I'm involved in. If the "Keepers" Category isn't enabled, they get deleted after the trip. On the GPS I can sort the waypoints by category so that only the "Specific Trip" waypoints are displayed or searched. Must have feature IMO.

I am using a Zumo 660 and in MapSource you can create categories like "My Food","My Bike Shops","My Bars & Pubs", "My Hotels" and so on. Then if you create a waypoint/Favorite you can assign it a category.

This way when you select the Favorites menu option on the GPS you first get a list of categories to select from rather then a long list of unsorted waypoints/favorites.

This allows you to do the same type of thing the POI loader does when you use the Extras menu option.

I hope that clears up my first post.
  • Do you know if the Nuvi, Dakota, or Oregon supports this feature? I can't tell from the web descriptions.
  • Sorry, no idea. There are so many current and discontinued Nuvi models with different feature sets it's almost impossible to keep track of what does what. Garmin's website, sadly, is not much help.

The thing is this feature may or may not be supported in the GPS units be it should not matter as it is currently a feature in the MapSource application. It is a popup window that allows you to assign a category to a waypoint. It then takes that data and puts it into the gpx file in a format the will put these into categories if the GPS can inter-pet tagging in the gpx file. So Basecamp needs to add a property window for the waypoints like mapsource and also write the output to the gpx file the same way. I can't understand why this would be hard to add to the basecamp application they have already developed the logic before so they should be able to port it....

You're not alone. IMO, BaseCamp should have started with all of the functionality of MapSource, but alas it's not to be. This and the lack of custom avoids are the two main reasons I'm still using MapSource on my Macs.

Agreed but I hate having to startup windows on the Mac just to use mapsource.

Because it makes me keep the maps updated in both base camp on the Mac side and Mapsource on the windows side and as I am sure you know that is a process in it's self keeping them in sync.

Favorites especially helpful when getting a new unit

This would be a great feature. I backup my nuvi 765T to BaseCamp every so often (every time I add a few new waypoints, etc.). I thought I was golden when the unit died a (luckily in-warranty) death, and they sent me a new one. But after restoring with BaseCamp, I had 200+ waypoints that all used to be in categories. I guess it's easier to bring up MapSource and categorize them there? (and yeah, I'm on a Mac so bringing up Windows feels no fun).
