New to garmin basecamp

All:

I am new to Garmin Basecamp and to GPS in general. I got a Garmin Venture HC and subsequently downloaded Basecamp for Mac and a US Topo map of the Adirondack Mountains.

In trying to create a route from trail-head to mountain top, or any other destination, I cannot figure out how to get the route results that I have seen online, in Youtube videos and other blogs. The detailed route, zigzaging across the screen, for me, is just a straight line. This does not, A) show the proper millage from point to point, and B) does not provide any helpful information for me in planning a hike.

This is probably a rookie mistake that I am making, and yet, I cannot find any information on this online anywhere.

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

I'm just guessing here about what you are looking for, but try creating a track instead of a route. And if you are, say, planning to take a specific trail, "draw" the track carefully so that it follows that trail. The kind of automatic routing where you specify just the beginning and end--and the software does the rest: that's typically available for roads (given the right mapping package), not for trails.

If you are getting just a straight line it is probably because the map you are using does not have routing data. You don't mention the name of the map other than "US Topo map of the Adirondack Mountains" and where you got it. Is it a map you bought from Garmin or is it a map you downloaded from one of those free map download sites?

topo map may be resgtricted functionality?

I have also had difficulty finding out what the different maps can support.
I first bought at topo map of Denmark and was told that it could give me the route from one place to another directly in my edge 705. but unfortunately it could only do it between towns and fixed pois but not to specific adresses.
So I bought a map of Europe and now the edge can show a non straight rute from one adress to another if I tell it to follow a road and not go straight.
But it is a pity that the topo map cant do the same because otherwise it is amazing how detailed it is with even very tiny trails and you can decide if you ar on foot og bike or whatever.
