New BaseCamp user--help accessing downloaded map

I just bought an Oregon 450 and I downloaded the 24k Topo US West map product. I bought an 8GB microSD card and installed it into the 450.
I had trouble getting the download onto the device because it apparently tries to download to the internal memory, of which there isn’t enough in the 450 for the Topo West product. Eventually I got the map product onto the microSD card and it seems to be working fine in the 450 unit.
I want to be able to open the map on my MacBook Pro and add my own waypoints and routes and then download that information from the Mac to the 450. But I can’t get the 24K West map to display on the Mac—I’ve tried using Base Camp, and done all the ancillary installs, but Base Camp just doesn’t read the 24K West files.
I also want to be able to capture waypoints in the field and then upload them to the Mac to see them on the map.
Where can I get clear, complete and accurate instructions on how to do these basic functions?

Many thanks.
  • I believe the issue with your maps is the file names. BaseCamp 3.0.1 looks for gmapsupp.img on the card. If your .img file is named something else, you can either rename it or wait for 3.0.2 which should fix this issue.

As for directions, I would read the manual for the 450 on marking waypoints. You can look Transferring Data in the BaseCamp help on how to get them from your device.

just resolved this very issue this morning & there is a typo in the last reply. the file name needed is gmapsupp.img (with 2 p's). (edit: the previous post was fixed)

simply use finder to locate the .img file on your microsd card and rename it to gmapsupp.img. then start basecamp and it should start reading the map
