Problem downloading route from BaseCamp

I have a small company that designs historic and scenic road tours for counties primarily in the midwest. I have requests now from motorcycle riders that want these routes in a GPX file to download onto their Garmin as opposed to a hard copy booklet.

I can layout the routes on Base Camp but when I download it to a nuvi 205W, nothing happens. I receive a message that the download is complete but I can't find it on the Garmin.

I'm not tech savvy at all so I've got a few basic questions:

1. Is the nuvi 205W even compatible with Base Camp? I wanted to work with one one the more entry level Garmin units on this project as I figured if I can get it to work on the nuvi 205W it should work on the higher end Garmins.

2. Could the route be downloaded in the Garmin but for some reason it's not accessible?

3. Should I be going in a different direction when it comes to software for these routes?

Any suggestions, comments, opinions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
  • The nuvi 205 is compatible with BaseCamp but it does not support routes. Here is a comparison page of the 205 vs. the nuvi 765 and nuvi 1450 both of which do support routes.

However, there is good news and good news. Firstly, most motorcycle users will be using a Zumo or other higher end device which do support routes. Secondly, you probably will get the best experience using Custom Points of Interest(POIs) which all nuvis and Zumos support. With Custom POIs you can include sound, pictures and additional descriptive text. You can read more about creating and using Custom POIs here. Of particular interest may be the ability to combine those POIs using Garmin TourGuide® .

    Thanks for the info!

I downloaded the Garmin POI Loader but now I hit another roadblock. I have a menu that pops up saying "Select a folder on your computer where the POI files can be found." with a "Browse..." button. If I don't have any POI files yet what should I put in this menu box or where should do begin?

The Points of Interest that I will be putting on these routes are places that very few people know about. Places like one room school houses, old black smith shops, phantom bridges that were bypassed by the county highway department when a road was realigned 50 years ago, old round barns, old canal tunnels, etc. These sites are typically not found on any data base or map so everything will be custom from the ground up.
  • I would start by browsing the help links to the right of the page I linked earlier: http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/. Note that you can add BaseCamp to MapSource and RoadTrip as an application that will create the gpx files you will need. There is also a significant amount of 3rd party information online on creating custom POIs.
