BirdsEye bad resolution

Hello,

thanks for BaseCamp 3.01 which is much better than 2.1.1 beta and even better than the Windows version ;)

I was also very interested in BirdsEye, but after I discovered some regions in Europe I'm not sure if it usefull at all. The quality is too bad...

Examples attached are showing Greven in BirdsEye, Google Earth and Geonetz Greven (my home town, N 52° 05.860' E 007° 36.080)

BirdsEye

Google

Geonetz Greven (this is a crop from left of the bridge)

Same bad resolotion of BirdEye can be shown for beneath all other regions in Europe except of big cities and very important tourists places.

Any idea if this will change in the near future?

Thanks,

Oliver

    Hello CharlieF56,

you have to use different names on the device as the birdseye maps are stored as files.

    Regards
    Anton

Thanks for the reply, I used names like

    newichita
    sewichita
    nwwichita
    newichita

This is actually on a win 7 client, sorry I posted to the wromg section.

    Hi,
I downloaded a sample Birds Eye image for the Bath area and was initialy very dissapointed. I discovered two things:
The images take a long time to download and you initially get a very low res image.
The detail seems to snap in with different zoom levals, it get fuzzy as you zoom and then presumably snaps to a different image that is sharp.
I was quite pleased with the final result

I have found that once you get outside urban areas that the resolution is very crude. Also some of the images are very old, probably at least five years old. They also don't seem to be georeferenced correctly, I have noticed some discrepancies in the highest resolution images where things move by at least 5 metres between adjacent tiles.
  • I agree. I'm in Ireland, and whilst some of the coverage is just about on a par with Google Earth, other areas are just a joke. There's one part of an area of prime hill walking territory near me where quite literally the whole area is just one big patch of grey. Not just a few wispy clouds, but complete 100% cloud coverage.

Other areas are of such bad resolution (comparable to those shown in the first post of this thread) that I suspect that in many European jurisdictions Garmin would probably fall foul of many consumer laws with regard to suitability for use.

It's simply not good enough, Garmin, especially when better imagery can be got for free.
  • it does depend where you look, for where I live in the Swiss Alps it's pretty poor but I looked at some of the remoter desert and mountain ranges I've worked in and it's really pretty good, a very useful addition to the appalling maps I've got of those areas.

... not that the batteries on my 550t last long enough to be worthwhile in those remote areas sadly

    quality in Canada

urban centres have same quality as google maps but rural (in southern ontario) and forest (in northern ontario) quality is very poor. The fact is if I am looking for something in the city I have lots of cues (address is a big on) In the forest a better quality is a huge help as it may let you identify a trail or pinpoint a feature not on topo maps that will help with navigation. I am not sad I spent the money but I hope to see quality improvements over the next year before I spent it again.

But you can use the Demo mode of BirdsEye before purchasing . . .

Could someone tell me how to do this please? Thanks very much.

Thanks Anton - that's precisely what I AM doing but when I click the BirdsEye bullet I get a message saying that I need a Garmin device that will support BirdsEye imagery. My Garmin 550T is showing as connected - hence my question. Guess I shall give up on this one.
