BirdsEye bad resolution

Hello,

thanks for BaseCamp 3.01 which is much better than 2.1.1 beta and even better than the Windows version ;)

I was also very interested in BirdsEye, but after I discovered some regions in Europe I'm not sure if it usefull at all. The quality is too bad...

Examples attached are showing Greven in BirdsEye, Google Earth and Geonetz Greven (my home town, N 52° 05.860' E 007° 36.080)

BirdsEye

Google

Geonetz Greven (this is a crop from left of the bridge)

Same bad resolotion of BirdEye can be shown for beneath all other regions in Europe except of big cities and very important tourists places.

Any idea if this will change in the near future?

Thanks,

Oliver
  • In the limited testing I have done in the US, I have found Garmin's BirdsEye View equal to or better in all cases tested. Better most of the time but I was mostly testing in forested areas where google is still in the process of adding higher resolution maps.

My guess is both Garmin and Google will continue upgrading maps.

    Birdseye Poor UK images

    Hi
We have the same problems with coverage of the uk, I purchased Birdseye on day one, but for me its been a waste of money, the part of Northumberland I want to use the resolution is so bad it is of no use at all, even the areas of the uk that are covered are no where near as good as Google images.
    Very disappointed

    Hi,

Google Earth/Maps shows aerophotos in many European countries but BirdsEye uses satellite images only. It will take time until larger parts of Europe will be updated to higher quality satellite images.

But you can use the Demo mode of BirdsEye before purchasing . . .

Be sure that you're requesting "highest" when downloading images. I know it sounds obvious, but we had a very experienced user make the mistake of using "high" as the requested resolution and he too complained the imagery wasn't the advertised sub-meter. Easy to miss that there's a "highest" setting.

Indeed, this could be a common mistake. But I used the "highest" setting and there is no difference between "high" and "highest" in my area...

Is there anywhere that the images can be viewed or tested prior to purchase?

    Hi amemain,

for testing just plug in your device and download the selected area.
But you can only transfer a restricted Demo onto your device.

Thank you Anton, I will try that right now.

EDIT: Apparently the Zumo 660 is not supported. :(

After spending the better part of the last two days downloading four maps around 275 mb ea, (very, very slow) I copied all of them to my garmin, went geocaching only to find out that I only had ONE birdseye map on my garmin, Has anyone else been able to have more than one basecamp map on a garmin?

So far, I am not impressed, and wish I would have never spent the $$$ on birdseye.

    Hello CharlieF56,

you have to use different names on the device as the birdseye maps are stored as files.
