BaseCamp and internal maps

I have an Oregon 550t. Over the time that I've owned it, I've come to put a whole lot of alternate maps on it, including third-party maps. Since the 550t has the internal topo maps, I've been looking forward to the BaseCamp version that lets me actually view those maps in 3-D.

So I downloaded and installed 3.01 - yay! - today and plugged in my Oregon. BaseCamp noticed the Oregon, said that it was "reading map..." and proceeded to grind away for a long time. Eventually the "reading map..." changed to "Topo 100K" and I tried switching to that view.

I got a beautiful map of Australia and New Zealand. OK, not that beautiful, more like a basemap -- some basic shapes, a simple road network.
This is all fine and well but I have (and want to see) US topo maps.

I have quite a few .img files on my Oregon:
-gmapbmap.img (installed before I knew that any .img would work; I think that this is something fairly simple but it's been a while)
- gmapprom.img (I think this is the TOPO 100K files)
... and several third-party maps installed as distinct files (CA.img, TX.img, etc. which are limited topo and street maps).

However, at this point, BaseCamp refuses to do anything but show me Australia and New Zealand.

help?

Are the maps of Australia and New Zealand the ones that came preinstalled on your device, or were different maps installed on your device when you bought it? If those are the maps that came installed on your device then that is what BaseCamp should be reading.
  • Thanks for the fast response!

It's a 550t -- it came with the TOPO 100k maps of the United States as the base map.

I have visited Australia and New Zealand but it's been a while and certainly not since I bought the device :) As noted, I HAD copied a third-party map to "gmapbmap.img" but I've never touched 'gmapprom.img'. And I'm pretty confident that the gmapbmap.img is NOT Australia/New Zealand.

Removing 'gmapbmap.img' from the Oregon does not make the TOPO maps visible, but it does make the TOPO 100K selection unavailable. My guess is that BaseCamp picked just the one map and is sticking with that.
  • ... and after asking, I figured it out. And I am now happily looking at the topo maps from my Oregon!

Thanks to Garmin for making this update -- is verra nize!

On the Oregon: I disabled all maps installed by me other than gmapprom.img and gmaptz.img (which came with the unit).

    On the Mac:
I cleared out the BaseCamp install in /Applictions, ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/BaseCamp, ~/Library/Caches/com.garmin.BaseCamp, ~/Library/Preferences/com.garmin.BaseCamp.plist, which completely cleared out the BaseCamp install.

Reinstalling BaseCamp and then plugging in the Oregon yielded a re-read of the map, and it picked up the TOPO 100k properly.
