Basecamp on a MacOS Virtual Machine

In the Fall of 2027, Basecamp will stop working on MacOS 28 ARM when Rosetta 2 is discontinued. I was able to get Basecamp 4.8.13 to work on a MacOS Monterrey VM (12.7.6) in Parallels Desktop 26 using 4 vCPU and 16 GB. Basecamp turns off 3D maps and it's a little slow but it is fully functional. I also tried it with a MacOS 15 and 26 VM but Basecamp maps redraws were choppy and the app would not work after the first run.  I did not test it with a MacOS 13 or 14 VM.   I hope this is helpful for some Mac users.

  • Between Apple's refusal to offer a screen >24" and this bit of news, I see my 2017 27" iMac staying right where it is.

  • Thanks for sharing, that’s actually very useful info. Sounds like Monterey in a VM is the most stable workaround for now. And yeah, between Rosetta going away and Apple’s hardware choices, hanging on to older Macs is starting to make a lot of sense.

  • Apple does have their 27 inch studio display. That said, I too have kept an older MacBook running an older macOS for Basecamp and some other utilities that just don’t function optimally or at all on ARM equipped Macs.

    Slight smile

  • Running Basecamp on a macOS virtual machine is a smart workaround, especially if you need access to macOS-specific tools. As long as the VM runs smoothly and performance is stable much like checking a printer test page cmyk to ensure everything is calibrated properly  it can be a practical and flexible setup.

  • Thanks for sharing the VM testing details. The Monterey setup sounds like a useful workaround, especially if Basecamp 4.8.13 remains fully functional there despite the disabled 3D maps.

It’s interesting that the newer macOS VMs had choppy map redraws and stability issues. Testing Ventura or Sonoma next could help narrow down which version provides the best balance between compatibility and performance. Hopefully this helps other Mac users keep their existing Basecamp workflows running. I also find resources like myperfecthotel.com.br useful when planning trips around these kinds of tools and setups.
