Exporting 500+ point track files from Base Camp to GPS device

I am trying to export a 723 point 54.3 mile in length track file from Base Camp to my Garmin 76CsX. I know that the GPS unit is limited to 500 track points before it truncates the file. I have been told that you can get around this issue if you rename the file "Active Log". I have changed the name of the file to "Active Log", "activelog", and "Active Lognnn". In each case, when I sent the file to the GPS device, I received a message that the file had truncated. I viewed the file on the GPS device and it had in fact truncated the file to 33.7 miles.

How can I load this file into my GPS device in one piece? I know that I can cut the file into several pieces, all less than 500 points, but I have never done this before and I would like to keep the file intact.

Map Source users have the "filter" feature in Preferences that allows them to fit oversized track files into the 500 point limit for tracks stored on some Garmin devices. When will this "filter" feature be incorporated into Base Camp/Road Trip? Better yet, when will Garmin increase the size limit for storing track files in their devices?

This tool might help you a little, it has the ability to filter a track to fewer points.
  • That functionality is built into BaseCamp. Go to Preferences->Transfer and check the Simply Tracks by Removing Intermediate Points check box. The track will be filtered during the transfer to the number specified.

So that's what that is for... cool.

    Azdrmn,
I figured it out. You have to spell "ACTIVE LOG" in all capital letters. It works fine, if you do this. I also tried the new filter feature in Base Camp on a large track file and that works as advertised. You Garmin folks are making us Macintosh users happier and happier. Keep it coming.

I know this thread is a year old but it *almost* solves my problem.

I'm trying to export a 300 mile track from Basecamp that has 12151 trackpoints to my Garmin etrex Vista Hcx.

I used the setting in Preferences to simplify tracks to a maximum of 500 and it transferred the track to my GPS - the only thing is that the 500 trackpoint track that was transferred is about 50 miles shorter than the full 12151 trackpoint track.

Is the distance shortage due to the removal of the approximately 12000 trackpoints that were eliminated. I'm assuming that stripping them out straightened out the track - correct?

    Yes that is what happened.

I have done the same thing with a mountain trail of only 100 miles using MapSource. There were approx 7000 trackpoints and I reduced it to approx 3000 and the mileage dropped to about 85 miles and when I inspected the track it was definitely straightened out and not following the actual trail very well at all that was showing on the topo. It would have been worthless for navigation on that winding trail.

The trail I'm hiking is an unblazed wilderness trail and I'm not feeling very confident about the stripped down version of the track.

Is there a way to get the entire 12,151 trackpoint track into my unit?

As I mentioned, I don't really care about the 176 defined waypoints - what I want is to be able to find the trail should I get off it.

Update - I used MacGPS to split the 12151 trackpoint file into several 500 trackpoint files.

I then went into setup | map on the gps and changed the default Track Points to 10,000.

I uploaded the split trackpoint files I created with MacGPS to the unit and got a message that the track log was full.

So, out of 25 trackpoint files created with MacGPS I have 20 on my unit - I'm missing 5.

I'm getting closer but this still isn't ideal.

Is there no way around this limitation? Hard to believe it's there - especially since I have a 4 GB card that has a lot of room on it.

    Well here is a guess.

Can you break up the last 5 into routes instead of tracks?

You can have 50 routes with 250 points each.

    Thanks.

    What a mess. :)

There has to be a better way...

At the risk of being labeled a heretic, is this just a Garmin thing or are all brands of GPS's like this?
