Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

I would like to be able to search the Library. I want to look for a waypoint or route etc.. I would like to be able to search within My Collection or within a folder or within a list.

    Thank You
    Greg Q

If I understand you correctly, then this feature already exists. To search a folder, list, or My Collection
    1. Select the folder, list, or My Collection that you wish to search
    2. Enter your search terms in the search field on the toolbar
    3. Select the User Data checkbox in the search results

    Kind Regards,
    Greg
  • I would like to select a layer for view. For example at a point in time I would like to see only way points or routes or tracks from my collection. But today, have to separate it out in a collection/list and then only I can achieve it. It would be good to have this feature as an ability to toggle view for these objects.

Using smart lists is a pretty good workaround. Just create a list that will filter only the data type(s) you want and point it at MyCollection or the folder you want to see.
  • I'm sure this has been brought up many times before, but as a long time MapSource then BaseCamp user, and a more recent 810 user, I've always wondered why on earth we can't convert a route or track to a course in BaseCamp to send it to Garmin Connect - from where we can send it wirelessly to our device. The option 'Send Track to Garmin Connect' simply doesn't work with a track converted from a route in BaseCamp, and nor does exporting it as a gpx and uploading.

For years we've had to resort to TCX Converter or GPSies to add a time track so that we can upload the course - but surely it would be absolute simplicity to add it as a feature to BaseCamp, or to let Garmin Connect receive the track and do the conversion. All it needs is an option to convert a route or track to a course, and allow it to be sent to Garmin Connect. I much, much prefer planning a route in BaseCamp to plotting a Course in Garmin Connect - its quicker and easier and not dependent on the integrity of an internet connection, and uses the exact same maps as my 810.

This seems an absolute no-brainer to me, especially now that we can connect our device to our smartphone for uploading activities and downloading courses. So what possible reason is there for not adding this much needed feature? Surely not coding time, its so simple?

    Cheers, Alan.

You can create upload real tracks to Connect and make them courses because they have times (and thus speed). There is currently no way to create times on drawn tracks or converted routes. This has been on our wishlist for awhile, but hasn't made the cut yet.
