Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

converting a .img to .gmap so I can install a map with mapInstall. Sorry if it had already been said, 232 replies is kinda long to read and better said twice than once!! ;)

How come is map converter only working in windows while the app is supposed to convert map to mac format????

I would like to be able to export in DXF format so that I can update maps in ARCGis. ARCGis cannot (or will not) read neither GPX nor KLM files.

I don't know whether this has been covered already (only stumbled over this today), so forgive me if I repeat stuff. Having moved from Mapsource to Basecamp (forced as Mapsource not running on Mac which I have recently bought) I cannot find something very basic: a function that allows me to find a city/town. When I put a town's name into the search box, I get lots of stuff, but not the city/town itself?! Where is that then?

To find cities, I select Find Option from the Find menu or click the triangle in very lower right corner of the screen and click the Options button. I leave Top Results selected for Type. Starting typing under Loaction. After about 4 characters a popup list of cities appears for selection. I select the city and search to center the map on the city. If needed, I enter an address in the search field on the toolbar.

    Output to csv and simplification

Hi there are a couple of things I'd like to do but currently can't.

I have made a number of Google Fusion Table using lists of waypoints prepared in Basecamp. At the moment I output as a .gpx file and then convert it to .csv using GPS Visualizer. I'd like to be able to do save direct to csv from Basecamp, but Basecamp gives me a lot of stuff I don't need, while GPSVisualizer gives me a csv file that requires very little work to clean it up ready to upload to the Fusion Table. It would be great if Basecamp had an export dialogue which allowed me to choose which fields to export.

I use gpsies.com for track simplification because it gives me the option of low, medium or high simplification - so I can choose on a track-by-track basis how much simplification I want depending on the intended use (eg a google map or a track to download to a gpx). It would be great if Basecamp did something similar.

BTW I'm a long time user of Basecamp and I really appreciate the changes and improvements you guys have made over the years.

What's missing from the current "filter"?

Nothing wrong with it. I must admit that I've seen that dialogue thousands of times and it never occurred to me that that was what it did. (Is that just me?) Where's the embarrassed smiley when you need it?

    Thanks.

Simple Routing using the Activity known as 'Direct'

I have been using MapBase with a Garmin Oregon 450 for some 2 years.
I now realise that the British OS maps are not routable and apparently neither are the Generic Open Street Map files.
So there is no difference between 'Walking' and 'Hiking' - they will both add at least 50 miles to a 12 mile walk.
My only option in planning a walking route is to use 'Direct' for Routes and Tracks.
I would like to be able to include a walking speed (4km/hr) so that I could predict arrival times.
At the moment the 'Direct' activity seems to assume that I'm travelling by car a doesn't calculate arrival times anyway.

This has been on our wish list for awhile. Hopefully we can get to it. Direct doesn't assume any travel vehicle...other than maybe "as the bird flies". It is the only option when using non-routable maps though. For now you have to do your own Distance / speed = Time calculation. Sorry for the inconvenience.
