Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

I am still struggling with unlocking maps. I used Basecamp on a Windows computer and bought a Mac. I do not manage to unlock my maps onto the Mac. I already uninstalled Basecamp on my old Windows computer, but on the Mac it still says that I already locked my maps.

You are allowed to have the same maps (i.e. unlock code) unlocked on as many computers as you want, but only on one Garmin device.
So removing BaesCamp from your Windows machine has no effect. Unlock issues that can't be solved by following Garmins directions are best solved by calling their phone support.

When I first open an existing Trip in Trip Planner before I open any "Day" I can view the entire trip on the map by pressing cmd-D. Once I expend/select any Day I can no longer use cmd-D to show the entire trip - only the Day selected. Even if I collapse the Day list by going to Hub View I still cannot use cmd-D to show the entire trip on the map.

You probably already know what I want to be able to do - show the entire Trip on the map at any time without having to exit Trip Planner.

Good idea. We'll add a way to view the entire trip in our next feature release.

I now have a big dog MacBook Pro and your interfaces with my computer do not work. I called your customer support they suggested the original micro sim card was too small. I purchased a 4GB card recommended. I still get the message inadequate storage so I purchased the 8GB micro sim. Garmin suggested the 4GB card to begin with because larger storage cards the "device" has a hard time reading (???..whats with that?). I am only trying to download Texas TOPO no more at this point. Whether it is the 4GB or 8GB card when I attempt to download I get the error message "insufficient memory. Where do I go from here?

Thank you for your interest and patience. Steve / Texas

I guess first I'd need to know how you are downloading the map. Are you using MapInstall, a web page, or something else? Where do you see the message? Since TOPO Texas is not a Garmin product, it's hard to give much specific assistance, but I'm assuming you should be able to simply copy the file from the web to your computer and from there, directly onto the card.

Maybe this request was made before. I've done several searches but i haven't found what I'm looking for yet.

Is it possible to define a specific area in base camp and have that area highlighted? I.e. Ideally I want something like the measuring tool where I can use it to encircle a specific area. It would give me the sq. miles just like it does now. But it would also allow me to save those boundaries and show them on my maps. So if I'm in a defined hunting area, I want to be able to see the boundaries on my Garmin Astro. That way if I'm tracking my dogs, I can clearly see if we are approaching an out-of-bounds area. For instance, leaving a state game land area and entering a state park.

    Thanks!

  • Just create a custom map overlay using google earth. Garmin provides step by step instructions. The instructions are for GPS. Once you get the custom map .KMZ file just import into BaseCamp. The Overlay can be toggled on and off with the check box for overlays at the bottom center of the BC map.

I know that many users draw tracks with the track tool for this and download it to the device.

For any waypoint, I can discover which Lists contain that waypoint by doing a Get Info and clicking on the References tab. It would be very convenient (and logically consistent) if I could do the same for all the other types of objects that can be included in Lists (tracks, routes, geocaches, photos, overlays...).
