Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

Editing Tracks is rediculous because I can spend hours in just trying to cut off part of a track and save the part I want to no avail. There are no steps to follow or icons for cutting or attaching. I have the Base Camp Manual but there are no directions.

That's strange I found at least two methods in BaseCamp Help on how to Split a Track and Edit Track Points. The easiest of which is to use the Select Tool and double-click a Track Point where you want to split the track and then right-click and choose "Split Track at Segment".

    Cheers,

I would like to be able to stop BaseCamp always asking me if it can access my Time Capsule and/or SD Cards I keep installed in my Mac.

Is it possible to add 'Don't ask me again about this device' please?

    Thank you.

I second this. Why can't BaseCamp use some identifier (perhaps a dotfile) on the GPS and any SD card installed in the GPS to know that it's a Garmin device and ignore everything that isn't?

I'm a retired baby boomer that has retired and moved to the Mac environment. Mac generally gives us the essentials without complexity of windows. For example Quicken for Windows is a great program but has too much horsepower for someone that doesn't need it. However Microsoft's Streets and Trips is a great program and we have used it for years. I ran into truckers on the road using it. I haven't found anything that comes close until you put out BaseCamp's Trip planner. Thank you! Right off the bat you gave me a calendar interface that was missing from Streets and Trips.

It appears to me that a Garmin device cannot be used to locate your position while using Trip Planner. You give me this and I will buy Trip Planner for my Mac. Actually if BaseCamp could draw the location of any USB GPS connected device it would be great. I was looking for something like MS Streets and Trips for my Mac and couldn't find it. Seriously, Trip Planner for Mac.

I've only been playing with it for a couple of days. But I like it a lot. Someone else has already reported the bug about printing out the trip itinerary and the different times. What I would like to see available is the ability of Trip Planner to show a connected GPS location on the installed maps. So as we are driving we can use our Mac Air instead of the device to do our routing.

Also it's not clear to me how to see all the different routes (hubs) on a trip together versus individually.

I was also having a problem planning for "Nothing planned" days until I figured out that I could use the previous days destination as an attraction or starting point.

We are currently going to Ireland for a month. Wife booked all the hotels. I went to basecamp and tried to locate them but some were not there. So I went to google maps and found them and in google maps dropped a lat/lon marker. I then copied and pasted that into BaseCamp to create a Waypoint. I did this for about 20 stops. If you haven't already done something like this, do it. That is try planning a trip for a month. I think this exercise will provide you great feedback on what I'm trying to do and cannot.

Again thanks for doing this. I realize it's a start. Can not wait for more.

BaseCamp requires that you have searchable maps installed like City Navigator European Unit (CNEU) in order to do any search - even when you're using Yelp*. So, if you have CNEU or OSM Maps for Ireland you can find lots of hotels/Inns/B&B's etc. Google works the same way - it has searchable maps.
  • I would like to be able to use BaseCamp to delete geocaches from my Oregon 550. In spite of many queries and web searches, I cannot find a method that works.

You should be able to. Connect your Oregon to your Mac, select the Orgeon in Bascamp and delete whatever you want to delete

Are you emptying the trash after the deletion and before you disconnect the device?

I know that CompeGPS TwoNav and LAND software will give you this. The TwoNav is a full featured Navigation software running on Windows, WindowsCE, Android, iOS and OSX. The LAND software runs on Windows and OSX and both are usable with lots of GPS models. They have V-TomTom maps for normal road use, and maps can be shared between them (one installation on same computer).

License is nice, you buy one and get three. See also this little video for a TwoNav / LAND impression (windows, have not made the mac version yet): http://youtu.be/ogN8Qy4YZSY?t=1m31s
