Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

Yes, BaseCamp does not have a DEM Base Map and it would be nice if it did.

If you're using a map like City Navigator they don't have Elevation data. You need to have something with Elevation data like Topo U.S. 24K or Topo U.S. 100K.

When I want to Geotag a photo I just switch my active map to one of the Topo's. Works great.

    Cheers,

Things I cannot accomplish in BaseCamp

    1. There appears to be no place to set average speed, either for specific road types or for the trip overall. This capability is really quite important in long distance motorcycling where one may be attempting do to routing over several, thousand mile, days. I know that Motorcycle appears as my travel preference but I both have no ideas as to what the motorcycle parameters are nor can I change them.

    2. Find by intersection

    3. Find is somewhat inconsistent. I was able to find an address in Mapsource. When I tried using BaseCamp, even when I had the street on the map and using the same mapping data, BC could not locate the street although it found similarly named streets 10 miles away.
  • One thing I'm trying to accomplish is fully geotagged photos from my DSLR. Base Camp 3.2.2 writes only lat lon data but not altitude. Also some photos appear not to line up with the track data even after using Match Photos...

This should work in the upcoming 3.2.2 release as long as the track you track match against has elevation.

The average speed for automotive and motorcycle are based on the road. We are looking into adding the ability to customize the speed, though it will still only affect travel time, not the actual route taken. This will match PC BaseCamp's behavior.

    2. Find by intersection

We are planning to add Find by Intersection.

Could you can give us specifics (map and string you entered) so we can figure out what is going wrong?

    Thanks for the feedback.

    Find (some more)

I had noticed in another thread that someone else was having trouble with the inconsistency or the idiosyncrasy of the find function. It seems that searching for a town only works if near is blank and centre of screen is in the near field. Searching for Boise doesn't get you a choice for Boise Idaho and typing Idaho in the "near" field only returns towns named Idaho.

It shouldn't be so hard guys.

    Find intersections and addresses.

If a way point or POI has phone number and street address get that over to the GPS.

That's what I can think of for the moment.

    Thanks for asking.

I often type something like "Boise" into the Search For Field and then "Boise" in the Near field. Doing that with your example, even with Boise, ID, USA selected in the Near choices, lands me in a community near Montreal. WTF, as the kids say.

However, leaving Search For blank and putting "Boise" in Near does yield the choice of Boise, ID, USA and puts me in Idaho.

To find address, I center on the city and enter the address. I select it from the find list and click the waypoint creation button. Most POI have phone numbers, and they appear in the comments and contact info of BaseCamp. You can drag the waypoint to most GPS that Garmin makes if the device is plugged into you usb port and the waypoint will appear in your favorites. What happens to the phone number is determined by the model GPS you have. I think finding intersections is coming in a future release.
  • How about a decent tutorial? I find using BC so non-intuitive it makes my teeth hurt. For example, the software wants to keep changing route...why?

Honestly... give me a way to learn the program so I can get into it. It is so difficult as is.

I'd like to add my request for something like this as well. If I don't use the software for a couple of months I have terrible trouble remembering what I have to do.

I'm a UK based motorcyclist and I use the Zumo to create interesting routes in both the UK and Europe. All I want to do is set a route, or initially allow the BC software to create a route, drag points on the route to a more interesting road, save it and upload it to the Garmin Zumo 660.

My Zumo shows 2 sets of maps in Basecamp, no idea why or which one I should delete? I often forget that I then have to 'import data' next time I use the Zumo to see the routes (but not every time because sometimes it just finds them!).

It has also saved every route, waypoint etc that I've ever entered on both the Zumo and Basecamp. Even though I delete these several times they always reappear when I do a synch.

Can the synch and map management just be made much more simple please?

This was a really helpful tutorial I found that at least allowed me to create and save an interesting route. The point about not selecting waypoints at intersections and splitting longer routes into sections were especially helpful.

I feel that something written in this style, with illustrations, as a tutorial would avoid a lot of the common mistakes that users make and find their experience of using Basecamp so frustrating.

Have you used the video tutorials that were added as part of 3.3 (http://www8.garmin.com/learningcenter/training/basecamp/#Mac)? That is exactly why there were added.
