Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.
  • Maybe we should donate to a reward program like we did for the first person that could make the intel mac boot XP. :-). Seriously, Subfolder or SubList as they are now called would be a great organizational tool along with the multiple sorts DANHICKSTEIN requested, especially for geocachers. If BaseCamp is going to store all my GeoData I need filters. Smart folders could substitute for the traditional filter but you can't create a smart folder to pull descriptions that contains "GA" for example at this point in time.

I spend a lot of time searching for symbols from the popup box. If we could assign a name to the symbol and query by symbol name, I think it would be easier to find your symbol. The GPX file has names for the symbols if these names appeared by the symbol and I could query by text, it would probable be better for finding symbols but I think most people would prefer to assign their own names.

The batch change option is great. Thanks

    multiple collections

One more vote for multiple collections / subfolders for lists to better organize lists.
I´ve stored 50 plus lists in basecamp now. To handle this in the sidebar list is very uncomfortable.
If the gpx file standard supports this a field to add comments to a track would be great. Positioned beneath the link/file field in the track details panel.

As a mac user I very much appreciate the great efforts in basecamp during the last year. No more need to boot ugly windows in parallels ;)
  • I want to support with my vote the request for multiple collection / subfolders.

I need to manage 2600 objects (WP, TRK and Routes grouped in more than 200/300 activities) in my collection and it's not so easy without subfolders - even using a good naming system.

    controls

I would like to see more "standard" controls (take a lesson from Google Earth or Photoshop)
space-bar = pan in any mode, for example (I have the selection tool picked, but I want to pan to a different part of the map ... would love to simply hold the spacebar and pan). Selecting buttons to change tools is not great.

Spacebar-pan sounds like a great idea.

In the meantime, you know you can use Control-H to switch to the "Hand" tool right? That took me a long time to figure out when I started using Basecamp.
  • Thanks for the Control H tip. Control first letter of tool you want works. For example control S for selection tool, Control Z for zoom tool.

I love the work you guys have done on the latest release.

I don't know if looking up street addresses has something to do with the maps and who produces them, or with BC, but when I have a OpenStreetMap of Suriname and want to look up the street called "Waaldijkstraat", is doesn't find it. When I do a search for "A. L. Waaldijkstraat" [as it is officially called and noted on the map] is does show up in the find box. Now I didn't know the street was called like that and people told me to go to the "Waaldijkstraat" which I can't find like that in BC.

I would like to be able to find the "A. L. Waaldijkstraat" if I search for "Waaldijkstraat".

    Adventurous greetings,
    Coen

How about a decent tutorial? I find using BC so non-intuitive it makes my teeth hurt. For example, the software wants to keep changing route...why?

Honestly... give me a way to learn the program so I can get into it. It is so difficult as is.

Thanks for the feedback. It turns out we are working on a set of video tutorials that I hope will solve at least some of your issues.

I do have to ask what you mean by "changing route"? Do you mean that it is recalculating when you make a change?

We want BaseCamp to be as intuitive as possible, so if you can give other examples of issues you are experiencing, it would be helpful.

    Match Photos writes z-coordenate

One thing I'm trying to accomplish is fully geotagged photos from my DSLR. Base Camp 3.2.2 writes only lat lon data but not altitude. Also some photos appear not to line up with the track data even after using Match Photos...
