Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.
  • Just like to add support to the request that I did see earlier in this thread for the ability (as in MapSource) to add a Category to a waypoint,

I think the place for this would be the Get Info Pane|Advanced.

At the moment do all my Garmin GPS stuff on Mapsource with a VMWare Win install and MapSource

    Total climbing/descending for a track

I would love it if Basecamp would tell me the total climbing/descending on a track or a part of a track (i.e. sum up all of the hills).

    Thanks!

As folders now allow you to "categorize" your data, what additional functionality are you missing? The ability for the device to use the same category?

Exactly. With BaseCamp I've used different symbols for waypoints to simulate categories, but most of my waypoints have at least 2 and up to 5 or 6 categories. Sorting them all manually is a chore.

BaseCamp response appears to be affected by the amount of BirdsEye files. It appears that BaseCamp looks at all the data in all the lists folders on startup. If the lists folders had enable/disable ability, I could put everything (waypoints, tracks, birdseye images) for a specific area in a list folder and only enable it when I want. Of course I would need the ability to enable multiple list folders at the same time.

Subfolders & read from maps on hard drive

    My requests for future versions:

    1. Folders for lists
    2. The ability to have BaseCamp read custom maps from the hard drive, rather than just from the GPS unit, so maps can be seen when the GPS isn't connected. This can be done in MapSource, and would be very welcome in BaseCamp.

    Thanks!

    Another vote for folders.

Add my vote for folders (both platform's versions).
As for maps on computer vs device? I hadn't realized that, but explains some odd behavior I've observed. Silly that requirement.

I find roads missing on BC that are on road trip. but when I create a route on road trip and click to send it to the 705 it doesn't transfer. It says route transferred but it isnt in courses or saved rides. Garmin support claims that is a common problem with road trip and they are working to correct it. At this point I have 600 dollar door stop because i cannot do a ride with out a cue sheet. ????????
