Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.
  • BaseCamp Capabilities

I have attached a PDF that explains how I use, or am attempting to use BaseCamp in association with an Oregon 400t (read: bi-directionally). A wish list is included.

Additionally, as I read the posts, there appears to be some large discussion arounds routes and associated failures to calculate the desired route, when tracks would seem to do the job. Perhaps the differentiation in usage between routes (on road) and tracks (off road) as described in the attached document might help.

Tracks are OK, but some units do not support tracks.

So we have to make the best of the routing functions.

I just wish Garmin could get all working and let it be portable across platforms.
Files created on the PC with invisible via points do not transfer to the Mac correctly, the vias get converted.

it still seems to me that the software development teams and the cartography team are not communicating the established details that need to be observed in order to make it all work seamlessly.

The 24k topo maps contain much more detail as to trails and are routable just like City Navigator. If I am hiking a trail and the 24k maps contains the trail, I use the routing tool to click the trail at the starting and ending point. I can then draw an elevation profile of the hike.

I find the custom map features very useful for adding detail to the maps. For example, it easy to find pdf maps of states parks. I convert the maps to a garmin custom map which gives me detail information in basecamp and on my dakota.

It would be handy to use Copy/Paste function to exchange routes, tracks and waypoints between Roadtrip and BaseCamp and vice versa.

Either way, it's something we hope to address in the future, but how long have you tried waiting? With the amount of routes and other data on the Zumo 660s in our office, newly transferred data imports pretty quickly (within seconds).

Could you (or anyone with this issue) post the current.gpx file on your Zumo 660? You may need to compress it to .zip to get it small enough for e-mailing/posting. Generally it's located in Garmin/GPX/current or Garmin/GPX. Feel free to PM it to me or just e-mail it to [email protected] if you'd rather not post it in a public forum.

As a temporary measure, removing the routes already on your Zumo before you connect it to your computer could improve the speed with which your Zumo boots and reads in new data after a transfer.

But it locks up everytime.

This may be an issue with the 660 SW but RoadTrip will send the route directly into my "Routes" area without the need for an import. BaseCamp will do it every now and then but most of the time it doesn't. Such a pain and not what one should have to deal with on this device.

My question is what is the status of this issue based on the information that has been provided to your development team? Have you found this to be something that will be corrected in the next release of the software?

I am happy to report that after upgrading to Software V3.80 on the Zumo 660 this is no longer a problem on my unit.:D
  • being able to search/find in your own lists would be handy :) It's quite frustrating sometimes, I am just planning some summer routes and I've imported some waypoint lists from previous trips, I know various refuges are in there somewhere but finding the one I want is a fiddle, being able to use find would be much better.

Yes it would be very handy. In addition it would be great to be able to search comments and notes in addition to names.
  • Hi there,

I'm new to BaseCamp so please forgive me if I'm missing something...

at the moment I can't find a way to:

    1. Split a track simply selecting a point with the cursor in the map view (without using the track panel and scrolling the list of points until I reach the needed one: not so fast!) - as in MapSource

    2. Keep the selected leg of a track zoomed and in the center of the screen when working in the track panel - MapSource

this is very useful when you want to "clean" a tracklog and delete unnecessary points.

(Yes, in BaseCamp there is an option "center on the screen" (track panel) but when the next point is selected you loose the center)

    3. right click a waypoint and access the option to "move" it (assign a new position by drag 'n drop) - MapSource

    4. Select an object (in the map view) from a multi selection (many objects in the same place) with a right click (and perform some operations) - MapSource

issue: I like (and I need) to keep organized my objects in GDB or GPX files for different purposes (Backup, sharing on websites, statistics, avoid mistakes etc)
Though I'm not yet accustomed with the new objects management introduced in BaseCamp I can live with it :-) but...

I've a file that contains 2086 Waypoints, 438 Routes, 293 Tracks (18 MB in GDB format).
I load it into BaseCamp (the time it takes to load it is neraly the same as MapSource), I apply some modifications and updates (new tracks etc) then I save my work to a new GPX file.

At the end of the process the GPX file's size will be 97 MB but BaseCamp takes SEVERAL MINUTES (nearly 10 !) to write it (MapSource takes 10 to 15 sec. to write the same data in GDB format).
Is it normal or I wrong something?

cosmetics: when the "hand tool" is selected, the mouse pointer is a "hand" even if moved over the "+" and "-" zoom buttons in the panel at the bottom of the screen

Sorry for my poor knowledge of English. I hope you've understood. :-)

    1. Dobule click a track point and select Split at Selected Point from the pop up list in lower left corner of track window.

    2. Not sure this is a solution but the routing tool in BaseCamp works with the 24K maps. I can have BaseCamp draw the route with two clicks. Routes when used with 24k maps will create elevation profiles, stay centered and give distance to destination, etc. You can also convert. You can also right click a track an select convert to route.

    3. Option Click and drag
  • PSEABOLT,

thank you very much indeed for your prompt and useful reply!

Point 1. and 3. works perfectly.

Point 2. unfortunately in the track window there is not the check-box "center on selected" as in the route window.

Now I need to investigate the slow GPX writing issue...

    Bye.
