Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

It would be nice to be able to get the total difference of altitude of a track (both + and -)

    Yes that would be great!

Thanks for the feedback. This feature will be in a future release of BaseCamp.
  • When importing a gpx file, BaseCamp (3.0.1) imports all of the geocaches as if they are new. It does not update the existing ones. Thus, I end up with sometime 495 duplicates for one area alone when viewing the name, although the GC identity is modified by suffixing a 1 or 2, etc.

This is the same problem I have with collaborating with others on routes. An item of any kind with the same name, co-ordinates and attributes should not be re-named and duplicated. Give the user the option to update the item or to replace it if something has changed.

    BirdsEye improvements

When breaking up a target region into multiple downloads, it would be nice if there was a way to have the option to get the cursor to snap to either the grid intersections and/or to other downloaded sections' borders/corners.

Allow disconnection of the GPSr after authentication of permission to download, so that I can queue up a few downloads and still use my Oregon in the field while waiting for them to complete in a few days. This of course assumes that I unchecked the "copy imagery to device after download" choice when submitting an imagery download request.

Provide info about the source imagery resolution(s) / capture date(s), whether at time of perusing for what to download for a given area or after download is complete (more of a pain if the downloaded region spans different source resolution / capture date boundaries)

Provide information when updated imagery is available, whether through notification based upon prior downloads or by a menu choice to "check for updated imagery" or such-like.

At the risk of asking for something I haven't been able to figure out myself and naturally looked for in BaseCamp: being able to install on my Mac the (topographic) map I bought on CD

You install maps either of two ways:
    1) Using the application that came with the DVD: Garmin MapInstall for the Mac
    2) BaseCamp will automatically invoke MapInstall when you send data to your device, automatically selecting maps that cover the data being sent. Note that this only works if you use Send to Device. Dragging data to the device does not invoke MapInstall.

Either way make sure Garmin MapInstall is installed. For the latter to work, it needs to be installed in the Applications folder.

Thanks for your answer. What you describe is exactly the kind of behaviour I expected, but it doesn't work that way. As I understand things, installing maps on my device (eTrex Vista HCx) is a two-step process. First, I install the map from CD on my Mac, then I transfer the map from my Mac to my eTrex. It is the first step I am having troubles with. I would expect MapInstall to do that job for me, but it says 'No Garmin Maps Found', even with the CD mounted. And I have no way of forcing it to recognise the CD (which is a route planning CD for Belgium and Luxembourg - for hikers).
I seem to have read there is a way, which runs via a Windows Install with MapSource and an app. that transforms the data to a Mac readable format. But that doesn't count as easy in my book. Any suggestions?
  • Hi,

It would nice to be able to create/move control points of the routes, like on GoogleMaps

If you are asking for what I think you're asking for, we do that already. You can click and drag with the select tool on any route leg and it will allow you to insert a via point. You can move any existing via point by option-clicking on the point and dragging.

    Organizing lists

Is it possible to have the lists automatically alphabetize themselves? I have trouble keeping my unruly lists in line :).
