Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

Here we go, I had a good planning session today and these are the things driving me nuts...

    1. BaseCamp is not respecting my route color choice upon recalculating. I like to set my routes a different color for multi-day trips so I can gauge the difference in distances, terrain etc. If I set a route to any color other than Magenta, upon recalculation it reverts back to Magenta.

    2. BaseCamp is not respecting my sorting choice in my route/waypoint frame. I like to sort by "type" so the routes are on top and the waypoints flow beneath. Upon restart of BaseCamp the sorting goes opposite, routes on the bottom with WP's on top. I haven't tried by name.

    3. BaseCamp is not respecting my folder sorting either. I can move my folders up or down pending on where I want them so am assuming that they can be sorted. Upon restarting BaseCamp they revert to what appears the most recent modified on top. The smart folders seem to stay put, I think.

    4. Re Smart Folders, I cannot create one to show a collection of two different waypoint symbols. If I try I loose everything, If I delete one line then the other lines waypoints will show, it will not show both. I haven't tried three, I don't wanna break anything. ;)

Thanks for the feedback. Number 1 and 3 are fixed in an upcoming version. We will look into the cause of number 2. As for number 4, currently data must meet all the the criteria for a smart folder to show. We are evaluating changing that to allow it to meet any of the criteria. Currently, you would need to create 2 smart folders. Sorry for the inconvenience.

    BC 3.0.1

I like the update, thank you.

    - The map draw colors are much better when compared from a previous screenshot. At first it's tough to tell but when compared it's much better.

    - The topo map projection is 90% improved but still a little compressed horizontally, much better overall though.

    3D view and track lines

When I view my 24k topos in 3D in BC v3.0.1, it shows track lines and waypoints behind mountains when they should be hidden, making it a very confusing view. BC v2.1.1 did the same thing, but I thought I'd wait for v3.0.1 to see if it was different. Anyone else have this problem?

    3.0.1

I just printed a "poster" of a route.

    - For the pages that are on top of the poster would it be possible to move all the "City Navigator...." info and scale to the top of the page so there isn't such a large gap between the top and bottom pages. As it stands this way I am just going to cut it off, if it was on the top I would be too lazy to do so since it would be out of the way. Better yet, omit it all together since that info is on each of the bottom pages.

This is a known issue. Sorry, but we don't have an estimate yet as to when it will be fixed.

We really need to get the software to import correctly in the Zumo 660 so the unit does not lockup every time you transfer your routes. There is no good reason we should have to use RoadTrip to get our BaseCamp routes into the Zumo 660.

GIZMO, the fellas here did manage to get the problem escalated to the Zumo 660 team for analysis. I'm not sure where it's at but someone was looking at it at one point in time. They may not know how bad and how widespread it is though.

For me, 1/7 times or so the route transfers from BC just like it does in RT. But the rest of the time it does what you and I are fighting with. It's not just us either. I'm thinking it may be a BC issue as well as a Zumo software issue. I have a bad feeling that once RT is updated it too will not transfer the routes as we would like it to.

    Find function

It would be great if the Find function could search user data (tracks and waypoints).
