Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

Sure would be a lot simpler and newbie proof if we could just "click" to make invisible.

Simpler yet would be to make all via points invisible and use waypoints if you need a semi-permanent marker that alerts you.

I think Killtimer has the better idea, but either one would work.

Maybe a preference for that? Those who want them invisible can select that, those who want them visible can select that way?

I am reproducing this this evening, but Like PAXTER1 mentioned the option(alt) key has nothing to do with it. I am afraid to give details yet, because I'd like to verify it a few more times.

Purely accidental on my part, so I am mostly sure it is not an intentional feature.

Denny can you lay down a via point without doing a drag of some sort, cause the drag thing just didn't work for me in the case below.

I recently had a route that I needed to send over what BC thought was a dirt road. I did lots of drags but it just kept backtracking off the road. It didn't want to do it and kept on recalculating it's self to death. In the end I needed to drop 5 waypoints for the route to take. Now I'm going to see and hear them . If I could have dropped 20 via points down I think it may have worked.

I can't make invisible vias in any location.

I can make them pretty reliably on Intersections.
I can't do it anywhere off road.

I think the easiest way I know to do what you want is to use this tool after your route is done.

You just add the text "unflagme" to the name of the vias that you want made invisible.

    Cool, an easy work around.

I would like to see a POV for the trackplayback, all I get is an moving overview. If I export a track to Google Earth, I can play the track and get the track POV during playback.

Thanks for the feedback. This feature is on our wish list. We are evaluating it for a future version.

I would really like the ability to show and hide tracks. If I have several tracks in a folder they sometimes overlap and it can be distracting.
  • Not sure how you want to hide tracks probable double click the track and check a hide box in the track window. Here is a work around that has some advantages in some cases. Duplicate the folder containing the tracks. Delete the tracks you want to hide from either folder. Deleting tracks form the folders does not delete tracks for your Collection unless you are in the collection or check the option delete from collection.

Once you get folders containing the tracks you wish to compare, just click between folders.

Presently I use the work around with a duplicate folder as you describe and it works 'OK'

What I had in mind was being able to select the folder in the left pane and then control click each track to bring up a contextual menu and have the 'hide track' there.

If I have a folder called Banff trip and have 10 tracks in it I find them clumsy when they are all laid on the map screen at once, even with the ability to change the colours. It's certainly not the end of the world and there are work arounds but the developer asked what we can't do now.

    Just a thought.
