Things that I cannot accomplish in Mac BaseCamp

We are very interested in learning about tasks that people are trying to accomplish in BaseCamp, but are unable to.

As most people know, Garmin originally had a very technical application for Windows called MapSource. This application was full-featured, but very challenging to use for many users. For a long time, we wanted to create an application that was easy to use by all of our customers.

When we started designing our route planning application for the Mac, we wanted to start with a good looking, intuitive user interface that all customers could pick up and understand. This includes the soccer mom that is planning her car pool route to the hard core bicyclist that is creating a trail map. As with all re-architecture efforts, every feature from MapSource did not port right over in the first versions of BaseCamp.

So we are asking people to tell us what they are trying to accomplish with BaseCamp and are unable to.

On the topic of shaping points, from a newbie's perspective why can't we just have check boxes in the route "Info" Via Points tab where we can select visibility? Auto check for all points, deselect check if we want it invisible and unannounced.
  • Some of us, believe it or not, don't replace a computer just to keep up with programming, we actually keep them to the end of their mechanical life cycle. So in order to satisfy a point to point market that doesn't really need a planning tool because it can be done just as easily on the unit, people who need a legitimate tool are made to suffer? More marketing BS. GeoTagging is done post trip, no planning needed. GeoCaching may have changed since inception, but last I heard it was still an activity that was more spontaneous and didn't need a lot of planning. Most iTunes users, myself included, don't use iTunes for planning anymore...... we just hit the "Genius" button.

Sorry for trying to make a helpful suggestion. You are correct, GeoCachers should not be using BaseCamp, they should not be managing 1000 of caches or planning their next outing routes by cache location and they sure should not have pretty maps with smooth text . Geocaching is just a silly waste of time. I agree Garmin should kill BaseCamp and port and MapSource with the older maps and concentrate on DualSport ride planners. Again my apologies, I just can't comprehend the complexities of DualSport ride and I have never heard of an nBook. I promise to never post again to anything related to your suffering from Garmin's lack of understanding of routing or the GPS market.

I think BaseCamp supports Invisible/unannounced shaping points if you option drag to create the point but a limited number of GPS have the firmware required to take advantage. See DennyHenderson Invisible shaping points are supported, posted in this thread.

Yep, I looked at that. My post was meant more for execution and handling of those points.

When in the info of a route, I would like to be able to right click and copy a point whatever it happens to be and paste it into that route or another route. I found when changing the beginning and end points I either have to to a drag and go through a couple recalculations or "Find" the route and "Add Selected Find Results".

In the Directions Tab of the Route Properties pane...

RoadTrip does not list the viapoints (shaping points)
But Printing is not implemented in RoadTrip.

Printing is implemented in BaseCamp, but it includes a lot of extra information that is just confusing to one who is trying to follow the route from those directions. Typical day ride is mostly a circular route, and that type of route is not not easily prepared without shaping points.

When I plan a group ride it is often a good thing to print the directions list for those who do not own a GPS.

The shaping points (viapoints just add unnecessary clutter to that list when it is printed.

So either remove the shaping points from that pane in BaseCamp, like in RoadTrip, or make it possible to copy and paste that information into a Word Processor so that it can be edited before printing. Actually the ability to edit it before printing would be preferable.

The map data does not always supply meaningful street/road names. In my area of the country The GPS nearly always tells me to turn "turn right on Jones Road" But the road is labelled as St. road 49 on all of the road signs that are posted at the intersection. So the ability to edit those details would be desirable to those who need to plan group routes.

Would a simple select and export directions to text work you think Denny. Maybe there could be selection boxes or deselection boxes for the directions that we want to keep or omit.

I recently copied a route and tweaked some stuff just to play and experiment without totally damaging the original. Well guess what, the original was all changed as well. I apologize Denny but is this what you were talking about before? Now I have found myself exporting the routes out at given points with clever names just so I can have copies that stay in tact so I can revert when I need to. Such a cumbersome and inefficient way to work IMO.

So staying in line with the thread title... I cannot copy and modify a route in BC without the modifications infecting the original. Sure would be nice if I could do that. Please help if there is a way and I am just not getting it.
