Feature Request: copy coordinates for google maps

Dear Garmin Basecamp Developers,

I frequently want to look for a waypoint or a point on my map in Google Maps, and it can sometimes take a long time to do this manually. It would be great if you could right-click (control click, two finger click) on any point in the map and one of the contextual menu options would be "copy (lat, long) to clipboard". You can just paste (lat, long) (for example, "39.09, -106.30") into google maps and it will take you right there. The cursor currently shows the coordinates, but there is no way to copy them. Also, they are in degrees+minutes, when I think that you just want degrees in decimals for google maps.

Many thanks for all of your hard work, and
Very best regards,

Dan Hickstein
  • By my maps do you mean your garmin maps viewed in BaseCamp? If that is the case, you have two options under view:
    1. View Selected Data in Google Earth
    2. View current Map Area in Google Earth

    Google maps

Yup, those options are great for viewing your data in google earth. However, I would like to view my data in google maps (maps.google.com). I suppose adding a similar menu command that would allow you to view the selected data in google maps would accomplish this.

    Cheers,

    Dan
  • Google Earth under the File menu has View in Google Maps with a key board shortcut. The copy feature would be nice but seems like every application uses a different format for lat/lon.

Yes, I have previously used the basecamp->googleEarth->googleMaps workaround, but it has the disadvantage of taking time and it only shows you the general map area; it doesn't put a point on the map in exactly the same place as, say, my waypoint in basecamp. Another workaround is to export waypoints to a file and use gpsvisualizer.com to view them on top of a google map. But all of these are inelegant compared to a one-click solution within Basecamp.

You are quite right that there is little agreement between programs regarding how lat and long should be expressed, but I would suspect that every person that uses Garmin Basecamp also uses google maps.
  • If I send an object from BaseCamp to Google earth, and view in Google maps, the map is centered on the object. For me this is easier than right clicking to copy, going to the web browser and navigating to google maps and then pasting.

I use google earth all the time but have little interest in google maps as I find little difference in the maps. I would think most users that need google maps would prefer a menu item of view in google maps as opposed to copying and pasting but all user have different wants and needs. Just another challenge for the developer.

I did a quick check and pasting the default lat/lon format provided by BaseCamp into Google works fine. Just copying the position in any waypoint's Advanced tab will do the trick.

You can also change the position format in Preferences->General to alter how coordinates are displayed.
