OK, I need help. I have a Imac. I have basecamp installed on my Mac. I have a 60csx. I have 24k topo southwest installed. How do I highlight a certain area on basecamp and transfer it to devise? I emails garmin. They said, move pointer to map and it would turn that area yellow and then click and it would turn blue and then transfer it. Doesn't work! Will someone walk me through this? Signed, Stupid!!!
  • Download Map Install, launch and plug in you 60. Once you upload once the computer remembers the maps you selected. It a complete over write each time you upload. The map squares selected are loaded each time. I you upload from two or more maps. Just choose from your installed maps.
  • It sounds like the customer support representative didn't realize which software package you were using. As PSEABOLT said, if you don't already have MapInstall installed, download and install it. You should already have it installed when you installed the maps onto your computer though.

You can run MapInstall directly, or when BaseCamp sends user data to your GPS, it will give you the option of downloading maps covering all the data you are sending. Note that you will need to use "Send to Device" and then check the "Send maps with MapInstall when done" option on the Send dialog.

    BaseCamp Highlight and transfer

I guess I'm not being very clear. I understand how to transfer using basecamp and mapinstall. In other words, I know the steps as stated in the last post. What my question is, how do I pick out a certain section of a map and send just that section to the gps. Lets say for example, I have 24k topo southwest. It has four states installed on my computer and want to send, say, the southern part of AZ. How do I do that? I other words, I don't want to send the whole 24k southwest to my unit. Thanks for any help.
  • In MapInstall you zoom into the area you are interested and click on the map segments you want on your gps.
The map should be covered with a rectangular grid which indicates the individual map segments. When you click on one it changes to blue and the bar at the bottom of the window shows the amount of memory your selection will need.
The map pull-down will indicate how many segments you have selected from the different map sets available.
  • I guess I am the one that is not clear.
    Launch MapInstall
Plug your gps in and select continue
Once map install find you device select in in the popup list, should be selected for you and continue.
Choose your 24k map from the map list upper left corner.
MapSource does not read the GPS to determine what is installed. Probable all your tiles will be grayed or unselected.
Select the tiles you want to upload. I prefer to drag a box around the preferred tiles.
Click send to map. Go take a very long hike and your maps will be downloaded when you return if you hike far enough.
MapInstall saves the tiles you upload and the next time you return they will be selected. However MapInstall does not save the device name so if you plug in a different GPS MI will assume you only have one device and select the last installed tiles. You can select from one map, change maps and select more tiles.
Each time you select a group of tiles from one or more maps only the tiles selected are uploaded and any tiles from the maps not selected will be erased from the GPS when you Send Maps.

    BaseCamp Highlight and transfer

I don't have mapsource. I have BaseCamp. BaseCamp works with mapinstall that I have. With the unit pluged in, (forget about mapinstall for just a second) does anybody know how to select a section of a map in basecamp and transfer. I know that when I hit transfer it goes to mapinstall and it sees my garmin unit because its pluged in. I just want to find out how to use basecamp without transfering the whole thing.
  • If you send waypoints or tracks to your gps from BaseCamp and have checked the 'Send maps with MapInstall when done' box, it should send maps surrounding the data that you have sent. I've never used this feature, so don't know how much surrounding it will do. If you want to define 'surrounding' yourself you have to use MapInstall.

I typed MapSource by mistake, I should have typed MapInstall. I assume you want to select a group of map tiles to install. BaseCamp does not transfer the entire map. BaseCamp will only send the tiles needed for the routes, tracks or waypoints you upload if you check the box. Just follow the instruction above, I will change mapsource to mapinstall and you can upload the selected maps squares. BaseCamp does not allow you to select a section of maps and transfer but MapInstall will allow you to select a section of maps and transfer. Forget about the way you did it with MapSource.
  • To be clear:
    • BaseCamp does not send maps, so there is no ability to pick maps in the app.
    • MapInstall is the only way to pick and transfer maps on the Mac.
    • In MapInstall, there is a box around all the maps that CAN be selected. Map tiles that are selected will be filled with blue. Note that the basemap may be much bigger than the detailed maps that can be selected. In 24K Topo for example, the detailed map boxes will only cover a fraction of the US Basemap.
    • On a very dense product such as 24K Topo, it can be difficult to tell which maps are selected if you are not zoomed in. Be sure you are running the latest version of MapInstall, 2.1.3, which will automatically zoom into the preselected maps on start up.

    I hope this helps.
