BaseCamp 2.1.1 and the Dakota 20

The latest BaseCamp will mount most Garmin units, showing the waypoints, tracks, and routes on a screen size that is big enough to use a map as it was intended to be use. The Dakota 20 supports removal of newly transferred data and removal of previously transferred data. I think all GPSs that mount, support drag and drop data transfer to the GPS.

BaseCamp and the Dakota also support also support paperless geocaching. Here are some notes on how I think it works.
1. You have to be premium member of geocaching.com to download the gpx eXchange file
2. BaseCamp will read this file type and creates a none editable special GeoCache waypoint. It uses the geocache symbol but sorts at the bottom of the list just above the routes.
3. Double clicking give a special dialog window with a link to the cache, the description and log from geocaching.com
4. From Geocaching.com, you can send the gpx file directly to the dakota and it is stored under the geocaching button on the dakota. The geocaching description and log is stored with this special waypoint. The dakota will not allow you to edit or delete the special geocaching waypoints. The only way to delete is mounting the dakota on your mac and drag the file to the trash from the GPX folder or select the Dakota in BaseCamp and delete it there. After deleting the special geocache waypoints and disconnecting the dakota, the dakota told me the waypoints were gone but I could see the files still on the dakota in the GPX folder when I remounted the dakota, something that I don't understand.
5. If you drag a special geocaching waypoint from BaseCamp to your Dakota, it becomes a regular waypoint that is editable and shows up under the waypoint button and can be deleted using waypoint management button.

This is a bug of a sort. It turns out the device is picky about the format of the geocaching data in a GPX file. Transferred geocaches should show up as geocaches in the Dakota and Oregon and nuvi 500, complete with ratings, hints, and logs. This will be fixed in a future release of BaseCamp.

If other developers need details on getting intact geocaches into a device, you can contact me though PM or email.
