BaseCamp 2.1.1 Beta posted

This update should fix Snow Leopard garbage characters, the symbol picking crash, and a few other issues. It also adds full sync data support for the Oregon 550s and Dakotas. Get it at http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4732

The only reason this is called a beta is because there is crash that can occur when making long routes on Topo 24K map products. Fixing this issue will probably take a couple of weeks minimum, so we released this as a "beta" for now, as Snow Leopard users are justifiably tired of waiting.

As with all betas, we suggest you back up your data by exporting or you can copy the files found in ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/BaseCamp/. You don't need to copy the directories, only the files. Once you update to this version, you shouldn't run the previous version, as the data files are not backwards compatible.

Thanks for adding supporting non-DEM maps.

Unfortunately, it doesn't display Topo Canada v2 maps correctly. They are compressed horizontally. Seems to work fine with City Navigator North America NT 2008 though.

This is in Mac OS X 10.5.8.
  • Thanks for the update, this is not a big deal but BC labels the route with the first item within the list without allowing the user to pick from the pop up list. RT allows the user to select from the pop up list of roads, POI, etc.

I noticed you are working Saturdays to get the update out. Thanks

Great news that maps without DEM are allowed, finally can edit tracks on the Mac.

Seem to be having issues with custom line types. BaseCamp is not displaying some lines that MapSource and RoadTrip are able to. Also seeing some areas of the map disappear when zooming in (below .3 miles).

    Example below (MapSource, RoadTrip, BaseCamp)
  • Seem to be having issues with custom line types. BaseCamp is not displaying some lines that MapSource and RoadTrip are able to. Also seeing some areas of the map disappear when zooming in (below .3 miles).

There are some significant drawing changes between RoadTrip 2.0.2 and BaseCamp 2.1.1. This may cause some rendering issues that will take time to iron out. Which map product are you using here?

Those are 3rd party maps... Can put you in contact with the developer if there's specific info that would aid in troubleshooting.

Thanks for your efforts with this product.
  • I have compared US Recreational Lakes Fishing Hot Spots v5 which I bought many years ago, US Topo 24K National Parks East, Topo US 2008, & City Navigator 2010.3. Just picking POI and viewing all 4 maps I see no rendering problems. Except for the noted above absence of the routing tool to select form a popup list of POI the curser is over, I am not seeing a need for Road Trips. Am I missing features available in RoadTrip not available in BaseCamp?

I consider MapSource a legacy application but many users have learned the application and change would not set well with these users. However, I think Mac users will be glad to switch to a single application. If I am not overlooking something more that stated above, I will certainly not be requesting additional features for RoadTrip. With the 24K topo National parks east map I can create an car route, and plot the elevation. I can only get direct route to plot using Topo US 2008. I have ordered 24K topo north central, I think this will be the first topo I did not have to convert from windows format. I am thinking all the new topo maps will do auto routing.

Thanks for adding the non-DEM maps! Quite an improvement.:)
Will manipulation of multiple waypoints be possible in the final release?;)

Routes corrupted when transferred to Zumo 550

    Powerbook G4 1.67 GHz 2GB Ram
OS 10.5.8 - all current updates
BaseCamp 2.1.1 beta - about BaseCamp states it is release
name of disk image states beta

    Zumo 550
    Software Version 4.80
    GPS SW Version: 3.00

I created a couple of routes in Basecamp 2.1.1

The South Route was created using BaseCamps autorouting.

The NorthRoute is the same but was modified with 10 shaping points to direct the route along a more interesting and scenic path. Each Shaping point was placed carefully on an intersection or a portion of roadway that has no address, using the drag and drop feature.

Directions Pane in BaseCamp Looks like this.
NOTE the total Distance in the bottom line.

I transferred the contents of the folder to the Zumo...
That seemed to go OK, nothing different than usual.

Unmounted the Zumo from the desktop.

New data was found and I imported the routes.
    so far everything seems normal

I preview the routes..... Something's fishy here:
    Note The Total Distances...

Not looking too bad, except the Flags for the Shaping points are displayed. If done with Mapsource those flags would not be visible. Experience tells me if those flags are present they will be announced.....very annoying since they are there only to direct the route to my preferred roads. Interrupting my music to say "Approaching ....." is not very nice.

Continued in the next post since I am limited to 4 images per post.

    continued from previous post

So the problem starts when I go to WhereTo > Routes

Select one of these Routes and hit GO......

The Zumo turns itself off ... black Screen...
same thing happened with both routes.

It starts back up, but if I go into

WhereTo > Routes that route is not listed there any longer.

So what happened to it? Is it still there, but not viewable because of something dangerous that happened due to the crash?

Further investigation revealed. If I save the folder in BaseCamp as a gpx then open that in RoadTrip.....Then transfer the routes from there to the Zumo it works OK.

So something is peculiar with the gpx syntax that is being written by BaseCamp that causes it to be corrupted when interpreted by my Zumo.

Garmin ..... Tell me what I need to send you so that you can investigate this further and get it fixed.
