Features, curiosity

I finally located some routable third party maps that will work with BascCamp when installed inside the package contents resources.

This allowed me to take a more serious look at the application.

The first impression is very good. It performs better than RoadTrip.

So my Question:

Are there features in RoadTrip that are not included in BaseCamp?

I've found several little things in BaseCamp that are most welcome.
  • At this point in development City Navigator map do not appear in BaseCamp. Routing with topo maps are straight line routes but preferences of BaseCamp has an auto routing or Direct routing option. I assume this means the BaseCamp updates will be more like RoadTrip. The main difference I see is BaseCamp is for outdoor use and RoadTrip is for Road use.

I have seen request for the programs to be combined into one program but I tend to think two different programs are better in the long run because it allows developers to pick the best approaches for outdoor use or car navigation. I would like to see a transfer to RoadTrips or Basecamp in the menu. Currently you can export and import a file, not a big deal but we mac users are picky. We just want to double click or in this case select a menu option to send a folder of waypoints, tracks & routes directly to the other application.

As far as I can tell, BaseCamp builds on the feature set of RoadTrip. There is nothing in RoadTrip that isn't in BaseCamp. It appears to be targeted towards those who use topo maps with handheld units.

Once the restriction on using only maps with DEM data is lifted from BaseCamp I don't really see the point in using RoadTrip anymore. Of course, if your needs are simple and you only use the software for planning routes for use with in-vehicle units then RoadTrip is all you need.

That was my thoughts also. I use it for planning Motorcycle routes. Road Trip just does not have everything I want. I'll be interested to see how it works with the CityNavigator maps.
  • The current version of RoadTrip 2.0.2 just doesn't work reliable with snow leopard (10.6.2) if you happen to have a lot of tracks stored. It corrupted all my saved tracks.

I switched to the new released BaseCamp (2.1.1ß) and everything works fine: It seems as if the Garmin programmer have incorporated all the features from within RoadTrip into the ß-release of BaseCamp.

-> BaseCamp rocks so far and there is no need for me to use RoadTrip anymore or wait for an update to make it run with snow leo.
    :)
