City Navigator Europe NTU 2025 - no detail in Basecamp

I have a Drive 53 with Traffic, originally purchased with City Navigator North America, since updated to 2026.1  The device has an 8GB microSD card as well.

I purchased City Navigator Europe NTU 2025.  I removed the 8GB mircoSD card from the device and installed the microSD card containing City Navigator Europe NTU 2025.  I connected the Drive 53 to my Mac, and Express did not see the new Europe maps for any map updates and for installation on my Mac for use in Basecamp.  I closed Express and opened Basecamp with the device still connected.  The Europe maps appeared as two separate maps in the maps menu of Basecamp.  I want to perform route planning for transfer to the device, but I cannot see detailed maps of Europe.  Only very basic maps appear.  Searches for points of interest or addresses fail.

Q: How do I see detailed maps of Europe in Basecamp to do route planning and to transfer routes, waypoints and POIs to the Drive 53?

Q: How are City Navigator Europe NTU 2025 maps updated in Express?

  • Maps supplied on a sd card cannot be updated or installed to your computer for BaseCamp to use.

To use the map in BaseCamp you need to keep your device connected and ensure the appropriate map is selected in BaseCamp. If you're only seeing a basic map you either haven't selected the EU map or you have the BaseCamp map detail setting set too low.

  • There are two Euro maps indicated, and I had selected the first one in the list.  The second map file is the detailed map.

I have been route planning in Basecamp with the Drive 53 connected to the Mac.  The snail's pace of Garmin to calculate routes is frustrating, ranging from 7 miles to  161 miles.  The most prevalent error is Garmin calculating a route that is simply a straight line, repeatedly.  Since recalculation didn't fix the error, I found a workaround by draging the straight line to a waypoint.  I maxed out disk cache size in Basecamp settings purportedly for best performance, but it did not help.  After two tries, the waypoints, POIs and routes appeared in the Drive 53.

I am beginning to think buying from the UK a Garmin GPS device loaded with updatable lifetime City Navigator Europe maps for easier glitch-free route planning in Basecamp will make more sense.

  • Yes there will be 2 EU maps on the card as the EU map has been split in 2 for many years due to the map size exceeding the FAT32 limit of 4Gb
