Feature requests: Appearance+WP description

Base Camp already does a lot of things I like of Mapsource. Thumps up!:)
Still some things to make it even better:

-the coordinate display of the cursor should be at the status bar below the map as the marked waypoints (WP) and not near the cursor

-the navigation bar (step, zoom, rotate) on the map should be customizable, i.e. smaller, without rotation for 2D, or included in the status bar

-It should be possible to customize the appearance of waypoints on the map, i.e. only symbol, symbol + WP name, symbol + geocache name (as right now)

-WP names in WP list on the left should be customizable as mentioned above, too (Geocaching name / WP name)

-more columns in WP list, i.e. cache size, difficulty, terrain...

-Possibility to read WP info/description directly from GPX contents, i.e. geocache descriptions, for times when offline

-The subject of custom WP symbols has already been raised, only for completion;)

That's it for now. Hope anything of this suggestions makes it into the next release.
  • Thank you for your interest in BaseCamp and suggestions for its improvement. We will investigate adding these features into a future version of BaseCamp. I did have a couple of comments:
-It should be possible to customize the appearance of waypoints on the map, i.e. only symbol, symbol + WP name, symbol + geocache name (as right now)

All of this is possible now on the Waypoint dialog's Advanced tab with the exception of Geocache name. We will look into adding that.
-Possibility to read WP info/description directly from GPX contents, i.e. geocache descriptions, for times when offline

This is already possible using the Geocache Info dialog. It will show description, logs, even the hint. Are you looking for something else?

    Thanks again for the feedback.

    Thanks for your quick reply!

It seems the syntax of my custom gpx-files differs from the original gc.com one. Works with the original gc.com files.
My files still include all the data but Base Camp is not able to extract the descriptions and hints.

All of this is possible now on the Waypoint dialog's Advanced tab with the exception of Geocache name. We will look into adding that.

Thanks for the hint! But unfortunately this is for single waypoint change only and not for the complete database at once. That feature would still be nice, i.e. global selection field at the status bar :)

    As for anything else... :D

Integration of all the 2D maps, i.e. City Navigator so I could get rid of Road Trip which seems to lack several functions and the working on that already went into Base Camp ;)

Another idea: the possibility to change wp names of the complete database according to certain rules, i.e. cache size, difficulty... For example 1HD6Z-T31S would originate from name (GC1HD6Z) without GC, type T=traditional, 3=difficulty, 1=Terrain (shortened to one character), size S=small. All user customizable of course.

I don't know about Base Camp but Mapsource-exported gpx-files seemed to exclude all the descriptions, hints and stuff. I would like to have the data included in the file after export.

Thats it for now - no guarantees that this is all. ;)
I am looking forward to your next release!

Thanx for 3.1.1! Up to now there are quite a lot of the features I once missed already implemented.
But - just to itch a little :p - Hamburg, Germany still can't be seen underneath all the geocache-wp names...

...perhaps as a workaround I should try to go caching more often
  • Seems you have your work cut out for you :)

As do we. We are planning on adding more support for geocaching in a future feature release, and I'll try to make sure specifying the display mode makes it as one of the changes.

Thumps up! Thanks for all the new features so far. I look forward to the next releases. :)

It is possible that your custom geocaching data is being stored in GroundSpeak 1.0.1 format, which neither BaseCamp or the units support. If you have the option, it's best to store the data in 1.0 format.

We've considered this feature, but haven't had the time to implement it. Hopefully we can find the time in the future.

BaseCamp does export all the geocaching data when it exports GPX to a file or to the GPS.

Thanks for your interest in BaseCamp.

As i said, thumps up for implementing all these features ^^

This one would be nice to have but for me the feature to globally change the appearance of waypoints (included geocaches) is the only one I still really miss. I dream of an option in the "View" dropdown menu:
    all waypoints >
    -show symbol and name
    -show symbol only
    ;)

That really did the trick - once I convinced gpsbabel :)

    Base Camp symbol suggestions

It would be nice to have in the symbols library a symbol for:
    Golf course
    Farm
    Coffee Cup

    Thanks,
