Command-plus should zoom only one step

In almost every mac program, holding down command and hitting the plus or minus keys zooms in or out one step. I understand that in Basecamp you don't need to hold down command to do this. This is fine, but I don't think that holding down command and hitting plus should case the map to zoom in all the way. I'm very used to using command to zoom in one step and I imagine most mac users are as well. Also, does there really need to be a keyboard shortcut to zoom in or out all the way? I don't think that people want to do this very often.

Cheers,
Dan

    Tool keys

    Also,

If plus and minus are going to zoom without holding another key, shouldn't H, S, Z, W, T, M switch tools without having to hold down control? I think this would make the software a lot faster to use because I often want to switch from the zoom tool to the hand tool and back.

I agree, this has always bugged me about both RoadTrip and BaseCamp. The convention in every other application on the Mac is to Zoom in/out using the Command key plus the +/- keys. I also agree that the option to zoom in and out all the way is useless/annoying and should be removed.

    Command vs option

Along these same lines, in most mac programs, holding down command and pressing the up and down arrows jumps to the top or bottom of a document; in Basecamp the option key does this and the command key does nothing when used with the arrows.

The command key also generally allows you to add whatever you click on to a selection (i.e. if you hold down command and click on multiple documents in the finder they will all be selected). It would be nice if the command key worked this way in basecamp as it would make it easier to manipulate ranges of points in a track.

    Cheers!

I would compare BaseCamp (organizing geodata) to iTunes (organize media) or iPhoto and iTunes nor iPhoto does not zoom with command = or + (+ requires shift). TextEdit uses command = to enlarge selected text. It has been my experience that the mac interface should only require modifier keys when the application was using the key for something else like entering text.

Yes, BaseCamp can be compared to iTunes and iPhoto in that it is a tool for organizing geodata but that's about as far as the comparisons go. It is in the Macintosh Human Interface Developer guidelines that all menu shortcuts be preceded by a modifier key to prevent the accidental input of text. In addition, we are talking about a convention that is used throughout many, if not all, other Macintosh applications.

What we are talking about is the fact that BaseCamp and RoadTrip DO have command key shortcuts but they do don't follow the convention that every other application on the Mac does in invoking those modifier key shortcuts.

It's been a while since I used MapSource in Windows but, if I remember correctly, this behaviour is carried over from there which, in my opinion, is the wrong way to go. Most users of BaseCamp and RoadTrip on the Mac are not coming from MapSource on Windows so that type of familiarity is not required. They are going to expect the applications to use menu shortcut that are familiar to them from using other Mac applications.

RoadTrip is not accepting input of text does that not mean you don't the the modifier key?

Do you think there would be a response that is any quicker than Garmin gives on this forum? And I don't mean a canned response (i.e. we will consider that for a future version), but action.

More or less an opposite situation, Steve Demanding Action is a different thing. I would expect him to respond in that case, and he would have responded with a lawsuit if needed.
