Emap with BaseCamp

Is it possible to use the eMap with Base Camp at all? I have a USB to serial interface (which otherwise works - if I set the eMap to NMEA I can see the data in Zterm) - but with the eMap set to Garmin protocol, BaseCamp doesn't see it.

Or does BaseCamp only work with USB GPS devices?
  • Garmin Mac software only supports USB GPSs. Sorry for any inconvenience.

OK, so I'm just after a basic GPS that will log tracks, provides a time display and is a small size (for photo geotagging). What would you recommend?
  • Making a recommendation depends too much on personal preference and circumstances. Instead I would suggest visiting https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145 to compare features of hand helds. Be sure to buy a unit that has USB so it is supported by Garmin's Mac software. I would also suggest getting a device with a high-sensitivity receiver.

Another thing to keep in mind is if you buy a unit with pre-installed maps, you cannot use that on your desktop applications currently. If you are interested in using maps on your computer, you are better off buying the maps separately on DVD and installing them onto your GPS using MapInstall and then you can use them in RoadTrip, BaseCamp, and Trainining Center.

Garmin Forerunner 305 is small, great for geotagging and log tracks extremely. Plus you get a fitness application.

If you buy a nuvi with maps installed, register the nuvi on Garmin's page, Call Garmin, they will send you a DVD of the maps on Nuvi for $10. I bought a lifetime update City Navigator for about $30 more than just the update and you download the maps which makes them available for roadtrip,
