RV795 Crash when importing GPX files

My new RV795 GPS will crash whenever I try to import routes created with Basecamp.

Complex, multi-stop route or point to point route, it doesn't matter. It will crash no matter where I transfer the routes to - the device or to the SD card. Resets, including a factory reset, made no difference. My computer and device have the same maps loaded.

What does matter, I found, is the size of the SD (actually a micro SD) card. When I bought the RV795, I had a few 64 GB SD cards sitting around so, figuring that bigger is better, I used one of those. Not the case. Once I swapped the 64GB card out for a 32 GB card, the crash issue disappeared. There is a blurb about cards greater than 32 GB must be formatted using the device but there is no mention of how to do that.

My device still has enough storage space in it for all of the North America maps so all I'm using the SD card for is routes and they're pretty small so 64GB versus 32 GB is not an issue. In reality, I may not need the SD card at all - ever - but my past experience with Garmin devices is that as maps are updated, storage space decreases so I've put one in the slot.

I'm just putting this out there for something to try if you have a similar issue.

  • Cards need to be formatted FAT32, doesn't need to be done on the device and I have no idea whether yours will do so as not many Garmin devices have that option. Cards 32Gb and below are FAT32 by default, larger cards are not.
