Will someone explain multiple copies of maps

Why do I seem to have 2 copies of 2024.2 and 1 of 2024.1 __ON THE DEVICE__.  Is is possible to delete 1?  They do not seem identical, one has waypoints and tracks.

MacBook AIR M1, 8Gig/256Gig.

I have loaded a copy of 2024.2 on the Mac, but it doesn't show here; I'm puzzled.

Thnks, George

  • The NA map is now so large it's split into 2 as it exceeds the FAT32 limit of 4Gb. The EU map has been split like that for many years. The older map is there because it hasn't been deleted, but you can of course delete it if you wish.

  • The size and split makes sense.  The structure doesn't.  They show "NO NAME" and "MAPS" as equal levels in the 3790, and that "MAPS" with the 2 same CNNA-NT 2024.2; those 2 2024.2 are each half (well, part) of the map and enhanced stuff database like POI, speed limits, etc?

So what is CNNA NT 2024.1 under another folder under "NO NAME" under the 3790?  Is that my 32G MicroSD card?  And it contains the "old" map database?

I __THINK__ I've loaded the tracks and waypoints to the Mac disk from the 3790, but they don't show.  How am I supposed to do that?

It's time to go back to my Windows system where MapSource exists and works better than this Mac app.  My son tells me that Macs are better.  My response ... for SOME things.

  • Sorry, I'm on Windows so mac is a bit foreign to me but you can certainly delete the old map.

I'm not sure what you mean by loaded tracks and waypoints. As I understand it you're loading them from your 3790 but to what?

  • These GUI operating systems are for the new thinkers ... my first real computer ran CP/M.  I'm trying to load them into the (Mac) PC.  Mapsource (Windows) works better, and I use it and GPSUtility for most GPS receiver stuff.  I try to update my Garmin map files every time I update the unit.  The old command line GET and PUT in ftp make complete sense, while upload and download don't explain it as well to this 74 year old guy.

You mentioned elsewhere that "we" don't have to be connected to our unit to update Garmin's computer map on (at least Windows) PCs.  I've far more Windows than Mac experience, but even there never found a way.  Can you provide a link to show that?

  • Well no link just years of doing it ...

As for loading your data ... once you see your device in BaseCamp you can just copy the data from your device into the BaseCamp folders. Alternatively you can copy current.gpx from the GPX folder on your device to somewhere on your mac/PC and then using BaseCamp toolbars import that file into BaseCamp.

  • It looks like the NO NAME directory is an inserted SD card. Remove it and the 2024.1 map should disappear.

  • I think you are correct.  I don't know if I used it as formatted, formatted on my PC, or if the 3790 formatted it.  Likely 1st or 3rd, as I would have given it a label. I've never noticed it before, but I usually use MapSource on my Windows system and it may not show the label.  I just wanted the Garmin maps on my MacBook and MapSource isn't supported.
